Launch of the first activity of ALDA's programme "Discover Europe with ALDA"
On Wednesday 13th April a group of 20 students from the University of Exeter in the UK came to Brussels to meet ALDA and the Council of Europe (CoE), within the framework of ALDA’s programme “Discover Europe with ALDA".
The Coordinator of the Citizenship Programme Aldo Xhani and the representative of the CoE Mr Lars Nyctelius showcased the work of the two organisations in promoting democracy in wider Europe and the long-standing cooperation between ALDA and the CoE.
Participants had a unique opportunity to get to know more about the Council of Europe and its promotion of human rights through international conventions since 1949. Key initiatives were showcased in order to understand the impact of the institutions such as the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and the Convention on Cybercrime. A particular focus was put on understanding the difference between the CoE and the EU institutions and how the two organizations cooperate between them.
The meeting was also an occasion to showcase ALDA’s multiannual work in enlarged Europe to promote democracy at the local level. Participants got to know more about decentralization and the success of the multistakeholder approach in promoting community development. Producing trust at the local level among local authorities, ordinary and civil society organisations is key for successful communities. Particular attention was also put to the Local Democracy Agencies as a fundamental tool to foster local democracy in the Neighbourhood region.
