During the International Migrants Day, Patras (GR) makes democracy local

During the event on 18 December 2016, Patras Municipality, who has been being an active member of ALDA for many years, succeeded in applying democratic values at the local level. City’s “ARRIVAL CITIES” projects made possible participation, fruitful dialogue and interesting presentations about interculturalism and immigration management.

The 18 December being the International Migrants Day was celebrated in Patras by organizing the local event targeting awareness on "ARRIVAL CITIES" project. The action was implemented by “Patras Municipal Development Enterprise for Planning & Development-ADEP SA” (project partner organisation) at the auditorium of the new Archaeological Museum of Patras. Various representatives of education, culture, business, consulting, civil society sectors had the opportunity to find out more about "ARRIVAL CITIES" dealing with exchange of experience and mutual learning on migration and integration and how this project is linked with the intercultural strategy of the city of Patras.

It was particularly highlighted that the pluralism, education, awareness and respect for diversity are always elements of the ancient and modern societies. ARRIVAL CITIES provides the opportunity of designing a local action plan in the fields of education, culture, entrepreneurship, promotion of equal opportunities and active civil society. This plan is an output of applying a participatory process through the contribution and active involvement of relevant local bodies that were invited to join this effort.

In the beginning of 2017, the consultation mechanism will be further more activated by ADEP SA, in order a draft of local action plan to be delivered by the beginning of September 2017.

ALDA is particularly pleased and proud of the actions and successful efforts of their members and partners, as the ones of Patras municipality, and encourage all interested bodies to participate and take action as well.

Everyone is invited to participate! ARRIVAL CITIES material can be found on the project site. Subscribing to the newsletter provides further information and possibility for promoting related actions. At the same time, the project is active on social media giving the opportunity to anyone who wishes to participate electronically, encouraging awareness and cooperation.
