EU: Torrenti, role also in the future for Local Democracy Agencies

“There are models of democracy to be respected, there is not an original copy to be photocopied and that’s it: when we talk about the enlargement of Europe we must be aware of it”. This was said by the Regional Councillor for Culture Gianni Torrenti, bringing today in Trieste the greetings of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia to the first meeting of the Bureau of the Association of Local Democracy Agencies (ALDA), after the assembly of May in Paris which renewed the governing bodies.

Highlighting the importance of the competencies assigned to ALDA in new areas outside the traditional Balkans, including Ukraine, Armenia, Moldova and Mediterranean Africa, Torrenti also recalled that “the forthcoming opening of an agency in Tunisia has a special significance, due to the delicacy of the scenario in which it will have to operate. The mission is not only to carry out coordination and knowledge work but also to experiment with new models of local democracy, often faced with very different situations”.

“The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region believes in this Agency – continued Torrenti – to which it is associated and which has a level of competence ensured also by the very different origin of its members. We are happy for the confirmation of Oriano Otočan as president and satisfied for the trust given by the associates to an official of the regional administration elected among the vice-presidents. ALDA, renewed and re-motivated, can play a significant role in the future, just as its action has had a strong meaning in the past”.

President Otočan, who also represents the Region of Istria, reiterated the “convinced adhesion to the values of the enlargement of the European Union and citizens’ rights, equal opportunities and defence of minorities: historical missions of ALDA, never separated from the attention to concrete issues such as rural development”.

“The collaboration between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Istria Region – concluded Otočan – is an example of those good relationships between citizens and local authorities that are the basis of good neighbourhood between countries and cooperation at all levels”.
