Strengthening the cooperation with Universities: ALDA and the University of Bologna and Trieste sign the internship agreement
Since the beginning of its activity, ALDA – the European Association for Local Democracy – is deeply engaged in the promotion of good governance, local democracy, citizen participation and decentralised cooperation, working side by side with civil society organisations and Local Authorities, and it has been working on the cooperation with Universities for a long time.
Several kinds of cooperation have been developed until now: some Universities are actively involved in ALDA’s activities as members, such us the European University of Tirana in Albania, the International Institute for Peace and Human Rights in France, the جامعة تبليسي التعليمية ، جورجاسالي in Georgia, the Ukrainian School of Political Studies in Ukraine, the Center of Documentation and Studies on complex organisations and local systems وأجندة IUAV – University of Venice in Italy.
Another relevant goal achieved by ALDA together with Universities is represented by the project Re.Cri.Re – Between the Representation of Crisis and the Crisis of Representation, funded by the EU Commission in the framework of the programme Horizon 2020. In this project, focusing on the change of social identity of European societies, partners involved are 15 Universities from all around Europe: Aalborg University, Università del Salento, University Ta Malta, University of Cyprus, Aristotelio Penaptismo Thessalonikis, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, New Bulgarian University, Universiteit Van Amsterdam, Paneptismo Kritis (University of Crete), Tallinn University, University of Leicester, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Muenchen, Université d’Aix Marseille, Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia, and Istituto Scientifico Biomedico Euromediterraneo SCPA – ISBEM.
Furthermore, in addition to the several activities run with Universities, ALDA also provides with the opportunity of signing agreements in order to host interns in its offices in Brussels, Strasbourg, Vicenza and Skopje. This possibility is particularly important for young students and their educational and professional growth: they will be able to learn how the work of an international NGO is organised and how to fulfil specific and practical tasks working in the department they are interested in, such as the Secretariat, the Resources and Project Development Unit, the Department of Project Implementation (with the opportunity of a specific focus on different fields, like Active Citizenship, International Cooperation, Eastern Partnership, Mediterranean Partnership, Decentralisation), the Communication Department and the Financial Unit.
After the first internship agreement signed about one year ago with the Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, also the University of Trieste and the University of Bologna, Italy, are now among the sending institutions that will provide young students with this opportunity. ALDA is very proud of this new cooperations, also considering the relevance of the University of Bologna, which is one of the oldest and , together with the University of Trieste, one of the most renowned Universities in Italy.
For further cooperation with ALDA, please find below the membership form, or contact Mattia Brazzale by email (mattia.brazzale@aldaintranet.org).

ALDA at Congress of Belarussian Studies in Kaunas

The Secretary General of ALDA, Antonella Valmorbida, attended the Congress of Belarussian Studies in Kaunas (Lithuania) invited by the Centre for European Transformation and the EuroBelarus Consortium, from Minsk.
The event, which took place from 2nd to 4th October, reached its 5th edition and gathered more than 400 representatives from different spheres (academics, civil society sector, social activities and more) to discuss about the development of the society in Belarus. ALDA had a place in the seminar dedicated to possible evolution of civil society and its strengthening. The debate was open after the great opportunities offered at the end of the Soviet Union for a possible societal change. Did we meet the opportunities and are there still some paths to follow? The discussion oriented the reflection towards a deepening of the civil society actors towards a more democratic and citizens’ based approach, which not necessarily is transformed into a more institutionalised approach to NGOs’ development.
“This is indeed our way of implementing activities in Belarus and with our local partners, such as the Lev Sapieha Foundation and EuroBelarus. We are very much interested to create a culture of participation and engagement rather than multiplying the numbers of NGOs, which are not the final goal of our action”, said Mrs. Valmorbida during the event.
For all, it was a good opportunity to refocus on the ongoing actions and to identify possible future cooperation.

Public consultation on EU citizenship – Europeans have their say!
Are you a citizen of an EU country?
Then you are also a citizen of the European Union! This gives you a number of key rights, such as the right to move and reside freely in the EU, the right to vote and stand as a candidate in European and municipal elections in another EU country where you live, and the right not to be discriminated against on the basis of your nationality.
In order to detect and remove the obstacles that prevent citizens to enjoy their EU citizenship rights in their daily life, the Justice and Consumers Dictatorate General of the European Commission launched a public consultation, inviting all EU citizens, organisations و other stakeholders concerned with advancing EU citizenship to share their opinions and experience on matters related to their rights as an EU citizen.
You can make a difference! This is your chance to have your say: tell us what matters to you and how things can be made better!
How can you participate?
In order to contribute to the consultation, please fill out the online questionnaire by 7th December 2015 and spread the news to others who may wish to participate and express their views.

Promoting Active European Citizenship - ALDA at EMI’s Heads of Office meeting

On 2nd October, ALDA, represented by its Citizenship Programme Coordinator Aldo Xhani, participated at the Heads of Office meeting promoted by European Movement International (EMI). The event is an annual gathering of members that is focused on the sharing of ideas and exchange of best practices.

A policy briefing session closed the event: participants debated over the topic “The rise of populist and Eurosceptic movements across Europe”, following the inputs of Ms Sophie Heine, Senior Research Fellow at EGMONT and Mr. Fabian Zuleeg, Head of Programme at European Policy Center.
ALDA contributed to the debate by exchanging with EMI’s members its main initiatives on the topic of refugee crisis and migration (the project RECRIRE and the research on legal migrants’ participation in community life at the local level represent the two pilot actions), unemployment and support to grass-roots initiatives promoting citizen participation.
