Paths of European integration: Thiene and ALDA in the spotlight thanks to the WeNET project

The city of Thiene (VI) and ALDA are pleased to announce that the project “WeNET – Working for environmentally educated towns” has won a place of honor in the review of the Europe for Citizens program.

***

The publication, entitled “Pathways to European Integration – A Review of Projects Selected under the Europe for Citizens Programme”, presents significant projects carried out, within the framework of the programme and thanks to the economic contribution of the European Union, in the field of European integration, intercultural dialogue, community policies, European history and immigration.

The WeNET project is led by the city of Thiene, a member of ALDA for several years, and an international partnership that the association has helped to put together. The aim of the project is to promote the exchange of best practices and awareness on the sustainability of urban centers in Europe, particularly with regard to solid waste disposal.

An ambitious and necessary project, which is traveling around Europe thanks to the participation in international events: in September, a representative of ALDA attended a seminar in Rostock, Germany, to present results and innovations of the project, and discuss ideas with representatives of municipalities in Europe and the southern shore of the Mediterranean; in just two weeks, WeNET, representatives of Thiene and project partners will be in the heart of Europe, in Brussels, for an international event on circular economy.

For more information and to participate in the Brussels event, please contact Aldo Xhani, ALDA Active Citizenship Program Manager: aldo.xhani@aldaintranet.org

Mobilising citizens to dream about their community in 30 years’ time – the experience of the project WE-NET in the community of Etterbeek

The Municipality of Etterbeek (Belgium), in partnership with ALDA and several citizens’ associations organised the activity “Forum des Solidarités” aimed at bringing together representatives of the local authority, of civil society associations and ordinary citizens to discuss how they see their community in 30 years’ time.

***

In the evening of 27 October, more than 70 participants contributed to the event. Developed according to the guidelines of the Open Space format, more than 15 topics were discussed, from the reuse of waste and local democracy to energy efficiency, the use of public spaces, energy efficiency and how to promote more social cohesion.

“What collective, realistic, impact-oriented actions can we develop and implement to live in the community of our dreams?” was the framework of the debate. Participants were invited to discuss whatever matter of concern to their daily life, to dream about their perfect community and to come up with concrete key actions on how to move towards that community. Citizens from every walk of life and the intergenerational dimension were a key to this event. Ideas such as democracy, food consumption, energy, economy and pedagogy were developed and shared in plenary on key clusters.

The activity is part of the local path in Belgium of the project WE-NET – Working for ENvironmentally Educated Towns, coordinated by ALDA. The initiative, supported by the Europe for Citizens programme, aims at promoting knowledge transfer on environmental, sustainable development and citizen mobilisation issues. It reunites local authorities and civil society associations from eight countries across the wider Europe committed to establish a platform of structured cooperation for exchanging knowledge, experience and good practice to promote successful communities at the local level.

Building a cross-border ecological network between Kosovo and Montenegro, Project BorN

Local Democracy Agency of Kosovo and Association of Trentino with Balkans together with Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency organised an event, aiming to create a cross-border ecological network for Kosovo and Montenegro.

***

The meeting took place on 23 – 26 October 2016 in the framework of project BorN – Biodiversity Protection and Development of the National Parks, funded by the European Union. Various workshops, institutional meetings and field trips for Kosovo and Montenegro participants will contribute into forming a cross-border network for a better ecological development of Bleshket, Nemuna and Prokletije areas. During the meeting, three core sets of elements were identified:

  1.  “focal species” that show particular needs in terms of movement inside the territory;
  2. definition of the environmental matrix that characterizes the different geographical areas of the project territory;
  3. the elements that will make up the cross-border ecological network core areas, buffer zones, ecological corridors and stepping stones.

The activity aimed at creating the network, capable of producing a sufficient degree of “ecological permeability” in the project area. Such cross-states ecological cooperation is also designed to protect the existing links between the two National Parks and surrounding areas, avoiding two protected areas witnessing an unwanted “island effect”.

The C-B Ecological Network will also enable cooperation and sharing of the environmental data, policies of nature protection in view of their future homogenization between Kosovo and Montenegro. After the Cross-Border Ecological Network is established, a Map of the Ecological Cross Border Network and a Strategy paper will be promoted by the participants involved.
