LDA Subotica presenting Balkan Kaleidoscope Project!

The Office for Cooperation with Civil Society of the Government of Serbia, organized a presentation of the Europe for Citizens programme for over 30 representatives of CSOs, local authorities, cultural and educational institutions.
As one of the good practice examples, LDA Subotica presented the project Balkan Kaleidoscope financed through this programme within the European Remembrance measure. The project raises awareness about the importance and value of oral history and multiperspectivity in presenting historical narratives. Taking the example of Yugoslav wars, Balkan Kaleidoscope challenges the dominant cultures of remembrance that reproduce mutually conflicting and exclusive narratives about one of the bloodiest conflicts in contemporary history of Europe.
The project aims at helping young people across Europe to better understand the complex and sensitive issues of intercultural and interethnic dialogue while developing teachers’ capacities for applying the methodology of multiperspective history teaching which fosters critical and unbiased thinking.
It all starts with training teachers and youth workers to incorporate this approach into class-work and extra-curricular activities with youth groups in local communities. The 10 partners from 6 countries will organize workshops with youth which should enable them to present their own visions and understandings of the different aspects of the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

ALDA grants an annual scholarship since 2013 in memory of its Honorary President, Gianfranco Martini, one of the founding partners and first President of ALDA in 1999, when the association was established. The Scholarship “Gianfranco Martini” is awarded on yearly basis to a student or researcher who develops a study or work project related to the following topics: local democracy, engagement of civil society and/or interethnic dialogue. The objective is to receive high-quality academic research and analysis for ALDA’s fields of activity, to develop new strategies of action and further promote these values.

How to apply:

The application must include a concise presentation of 5 pages maximum, in which the candidate indicates the objective of the study or work project, and how it will contribute and foster the topics previously mentioned. The applicant will also indicate what the scholarship will be used for. The application should also include a motivation statement and relevant references.

Candidates should send the application by the 29th of March to the following email account: francesco.pala@aldaintranet.org, with the object “Scholarship G. Martini 2018”. The successful candidate will be awarded during the General Assembly of ALDA, occurring this year at the end of April in Brussels.The grant is 3000 euros.

"Co-di-ng" Project to train students and parents in Sardinia!

The Union of Montiferru Sinis Municipalities (Unione dei Comuni Montiferru Sinis), launched the Co-di-ng Project in January 2018 in order to begin a training process involving the use of new technologies and respecting the rules at school and in family contexts, through the educational cooperation between teachers, parents and librarians.

The great organizational and economic effort the Local Authority has made led to an initiative based on an articulated partnership in which the sharing of values in a context of role diversification represents the real added value to the project idea. The starting point of the project is the Union’s Librarian System, considered as a cultural and instructive place and able to have an important role in both school and family dimensions when it comes to protect fundamental educational values such as respecting the rules in social relationships.

Not only does the Local Authority aim to improve its territory through material support actions, but also through investments in youngsters and families, in educational trainings and in the ability to create valuable supportive networks. The project is expected to have 3 stages:

1) 3 seminars held by Prof. Alberto Pellai (doctor and one of the main Italian experts in hygiene and Public Health)

2) Authors meeting in each library of the territory in which the project is implemented (Unione dei Comuni Montiferru Sinis) and discussing any kind of educational problem schools communicated them.

3) Transfer of all good practices to 2 EU Countries.

The first stage, which took place in January, involved more than 400 participants. The project is implemented in cooperation with the 11 libraries of the territory, through a desk service “Europa dell’Unione” (Europe of the Union) and an educational path for the Union of Municipalities students, their families, their teachers, the librarians and 2 Local Authorities from 2 different EU countries.

ALDA for women and girls in science!

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science takes place every year on February 11th. ALDA joins international organisations in promoting gender equality from the very early stages of education as often education and career paths are guided by gender-based stereotypes from the first stages. It demonstrates an important cultural gap not only within the society as a whole but also in the professional figures which play important role for the individuals in transition periods and especially for those young who might be easily influenced. These, for their professional role, need to increase their skills and competences on gender equality and to become able to raise awareness on gender stereotypes at the workplace.

As a result of the gender stereotyping, according to UNESCO ‘the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree in science-related field are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%.’

ALDA is strongly committed to combating gender stereotypes and promoting inclusive and non-discriminatory education and workplace practices. As part of the GET UP (Gender Equality Training to overcome Unfair discrimination Practices in education and labour market) project, ALDA conducted a series of activities which aim at fostering awareness about gender equality in education and professional life.

At the beginning of the project, ALDA and its partners organised a survey to conduct a sound needs analysis on the level of awareness of the gender-related bias in place in education and at the workplace and to understand what the target groups (teachers, HR experts etc.) perceive as discriminatory habits within these specific contexts. On the basis of the survey results, the consortium developed the report with the survey results  و European Minimum Standard of Competences on Gender Equality  which is a set of knowledge, skills and behaviours required to combat gender stereotypes and discrimination in education, training and at the workplace.

Within the scope of the project, the partners are currently developing a Gender Equality Training (GET)  which is based upon the Minimum Standard of Competences and the research results. The training aims to facilitate the encounter of professionals from different stages of the education-training-labour market chain who operate at implementation and management level, increasing mutual understanding and thus facilitating their direct involvement in the awareness raising campaigns. Scotland’s heart in Europe

We hear a lot about the impact a hard Brexit will have on the economy, but what about the impact on relationship with partners in the EU or the challenges facing the estimated 181,000 EU nationals in Scotland?

With the support of ALDA’s Ambassador in Scotland – Colin Campbell, from Assist Social Capital – an event gathering civil society and social enterprises representatives took place 7 February in Edinburgh, with the participation of the Secretary General of ALDA, Antonella Valmorbida.
“The approach of ALDA is value-based and it focuses on the power of citizens participation at the local level for being actors for changes, solutions and good local governance”, said Antonella Valmorbida. “Brexit (or not) does not change the commitment to support and be close to members all over Europe and beyond, advocating for their efforts to make better communities and implementing programmes improving sustainability, inclusiveness, and social impact”.
The participants were particularly interested to know better the potentialities of ALDA as a network supporting their local efforts. The topics of the dynamics over the Brexit was also addressed and by all, considered as a strategic failure. The wish of ALDA is to increase its members in Scotland, furthering cooperation and active support to local initiatives.

ALDA+ closes its first year with successes and new ideas

The CEO of ALDA+ Marco Boaria presented the results of the first year of activity to the Governing Board of ALDA, meeting in Brussels on 2 February.
The newly born Benefit Corporation company, registered in 2017 within the umbrella of ALDA, proved to be extremly successful since its very beginning. It closed its first year with a profit, and developed a number of very important technical assistance activities, both at the local and international level, reaching out many high profiles companies.
The prospects for this year are to further develop the work of ALDA+ by consolidating a roast of experts, fluent in different languages (including French, Italian, English, and Russian) in order to expand its scope of action and support partners and stakeholders all over Europe and beyond. A full catalogue of services and products of ALDA+ will be ready soon.The Governing Board of ALDA expressed their great satisfaction.
“The launch of ALDA+ was a fundamental step to strengthen support to our Association, and to help us to achieve our main targets – promotion of citizens participation and local good governance. We will invest further in its future” said the President of ALDA Oriano Otočan.
“ALDA+ really matches the needs and the challenges of an ever growing association such as ALDA, supporting its mission and strengthening its structure whilst offering to a wide number of stakeholders (local authorities, civil society organizations, companies, educational institutions, etc.), world-wide, a series of quality services which capitalize the knowledge and expertise that ALDA has gained in almost 20 year of successful activities”, said Marco Boaria, CEO of ALDA+.

LDA Georgia representing LDAs during the next semester

Local Democracy Agencies (LDAs) are represented in the activities of the Governing Board of ALDA by the delegate of one of the LDAs, on a rotating bases.
For the next semester, Nino Khukhua, Delegate of the Local Democracy Agency Georgia will be the one.
“It is a great honor, as well as a new challenge and responsibility, to represent the interests of LDAs interest towards the Governing Board of the extremely wide network of ALDA”, stated Khukhua. “I started working in LDA Georgia in April 2016, and my decision was absolutely thought out – I understood and shared LDA’s values and ALDA’s values. The number of LDAs has been steadily increasing – we can count today on 14 operational LDAs, promoting good governance and building a better future in their countries.”
Last year, 2017 has seen the establishment of three LDAs – respectively in Cimislia, Moldova; Kairouan, Tunisia; and Mariupol, Ukraine.
“ALDA’s governing board will be the best place, where I will present all LDA’s activities, needs, and strategies. I intendo to contribute to the strengthening of our networks, and of a more stable environment to improve our work effectiveness” concluded Khukhua.
