Pop-up galleries - interact with artworks

The CLINK project stayed active on local level implementing the Pop-up galleries in the partner countries of the Balkans. The local events gathered around twenty-five youngsters from each community and reached more than 500 citizens.
The Pop-up galleries were informal artistic representations providing a new view over well-known public spaces, by contributing to a new urban identity of the city.
The aim of the Pop-up galleries was to establish a connection among public art, cultural heritage, art markets and other cultural art activities, supported by local artists. The Pop-up galleries enhanced the social and cultural richness of the local community and encouraged the observers to interact with the artwork, thus stimulating discussion and debate on relevant social issues.
Check out the Pop-up galleries overview HERE.
The Pop-up galleries were part of “CLINK – Cultural Heritage Linking Diversities in Europe”. The CLINK project is implemented by 10 partners from Croatia, France, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania, supported through the أوروبا للمواطنين Programme of the European Union.

"Remotely together": all details about a crucial ALDA Governing Board meeting

As ALDA’s projects and activities are “remotely” proceeding, in the same way the Governing Board of ALDA keeps regularly holding its meetings.
Within this framework, on Tuesday, March 31st our President Oriano Otocan, our Secretary General Antonella Valmorbida and all Governing Board members gathered online to discuss about some crucial themes.
The approved agenda for session foresaw as first topic of discussion an update of the situation linked to the Covid-19 emergency: the global and European scenarios, a focus on how ALDA is acting and reacting to this condition and an analysis of possible perspectives for the future of the organisation. Undoubtedly, the debate was highly participated and all members agreed upon the need of drafting an official ALDA’s statement in response to the current political and social crisis.
“A Europe in solidarity must be “a community of communities”: this is the frontline of the statement, available both in الإنجليزية و إيطالي, in which ALDA reiterates the urgent need of a common response to the health crisis hitting all European countries, with social and economic implicartions affecting the lives of its citizens as a whole.
Another important subject of discussion was the reorganisation of the General Assembly of ALDA, happening in parallel with the FestivALDA and the celebration of our 20th Anniversary. Hopeful that the current crisis will be over by the summer, new dates have been fixed for ALDA’s main event of the year, on 21 -22- 23 September 2020, confirming Pula (Croatia) as the chosen location.
The Governing Board came to an end with a debate upon a new initiative brought up by our Fundraising department, concerning the support to specific fundraising campaigns as a response to the Covid-19 emergency. The proposal, which met the approval of the Board, it is now going through a revision process, and all its details will be soon released.
This was all for this ALDA Governing Board session, hopeful to meeting soon each other in person again!

The future of the Western Balkans is in the EU! ALDA and BNLD congratulate Albania and North Macedonia

The EU Enlargement in the Western Balkans has always been a cornerstone theme for ALDA since its foundation in 1999. Established as an initiative of the المجلس الأوروبي: just like the وكالات الديمقراطية المحلية it has coordinated and supported ever since, ALDA considers the EU’s political decision of opening the negotiating talks for Albania and North Macedonia only six months after the veto an undeniably positive result.
On March 21st and 22nd, 2020, in fact, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Albania. The decision was made in light of the progress achieved in reforms by both countries, which now fulfil the conditions set unanimously by the Council in June 2018.
During the discussions of the Council on the enlargement in June 2019, the representatives of France, the Netherlands and Denmark had initially decided to veto the opening of the negotiation for both countries, claiming that the access methodology should be revised and include a stronger focus on credibility as well as a clause of reversibility.
An informal document “non-paper” was then presented by the French President Macron in November 2019 to revise the EU accession process. It resulted with a Revised Enlargement Methodology presented by the Commission on February 5th, 2020. Both North Macedonia and Albania will now formalise their accession following the new methodology, while Serbia and Montenegro will be offered the possibility to opt in.
“This is a great motivation for these countries working hard to join the EU” – stated Ivana Petrovska, ALDA director of the Skopje office & SEE Regional Programmes Coordinator. “We are looking forward to the Intergovernmental Conference to confirm this political will. Most importantly, the message of the EU commissioner Olivér Várhelyi was clear: the future of the Western Balkans is in the EU. "
ALDA and the شبكة الديموقراطية في البلقان. are dedicated to supporting the European integration processes, with all projects in the Western Balkans contributing to the capacity building and networking on topics that are important for the reforms and the EU agenda. “Our mission is to support local authorities and civil society as important actors in the EU accession processes“, continues Mrs Petrovska. “All Western Balkan countries are in different stages of this process and regional cooperation is indispensable to reach the same goal, becoming a member of the EU“.
The decision still has to be endorsed by the European Council members and a start date or a time frame are yet to be announced. However, the Council’s declaration represents a pivotal turning point in the European Enlargement process, a beacon of hope for an inclusive future in these times of social distancing and closure of borders. The decision to open the talks despite the coronavirus crisis and the uncertainty over Great Britain’s departure from the bloc shows how eager Bruxelles is to bring the Western Balkans countries into the EU.
As commented by LDA ألبانيا Delegate Jerola Ziaj, “We are beyond happy to receive the good news of the opening of membership negotiations for Albania, especially amidst the tumult we are experiencing at the moment. This shows the progress that is being made towards establishing European values and finalizing integration within the European family“.

Sustainable Development Goals: a European Handbook and an ALDA Talk

On February 11،, 2020, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the JRC (Joint Research Centre) Acting Director-General, Ms. Charlina Vitcheva participated in the 10، session of the World Urban Forum for the launching of the European Handbook for SDG Voluntary Local Reviews. The World Urban Forum is the non-legislative technical Forum organised by the United Nations, recognized as the foremost global arena in the field of sustainable urban development and human settlements.
The Handbook offers an inspirational framework for policy makers, researchers and practitioners to set up Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) of the أهداف التنمية المستدامة (SDGs). VLRs are a fundamental instrument in monitoring progress and sustaining the transformative and inclusive action of local actors towards the achievement of the SDGs.
The Handbook provides key examples of official and experimental indicators useful to set up an effective local SDG monitoring system specifically targeting European cities. For each Goal, the Handbook highlights examples of harmonised and locally collected indicators so that local actors can both benchmark themselves against other cities and monitor their own specific needs and challenges.
The SDGs are something that we believe should be dear to all of us in our daily lives and work, and the crux of our activities. For this reason, on March 31ش at 11 am CET ALDA will be hosting the 4، episode of the ALDA Talks webinar series and we will discuss about SDGs, their localization, best practices and funding opportunities. The RECOV project says goodbye: the final publication

In the past two years, the ريكوف project (Rethinking Collaborative Values for Public Services) implemented a large number of local activities and achieved significant results in the creation of local networks capable of working together on the improvement of local governance through dialogue and participation, thus contributing to a more inclusive and democratic society.
All the activities and results of the 2-year project are now gathered in the final publication: this summarizes the methodology of work, the results and recommendations and all the implemented activities, such as workshops, conferences, sessions and presentations.
During its two years of life, RECOV benefited from the key contributions of 10 partners across Europe, which recognized the importance of jointly addressing recently emerging challenges and taking advantage of the opportunities arisen out of this cooperation. The project aimed at creating a network of towns that would be eager to work together on exchanging common problems, doing some collective brainstorming and introducing concrete measures regarding the project’s specific objectives – and we can definitely say it succeeded!
The final publication was implemented within the RECOV project funded by the أوروبا للمواطنين Programme.
Thank you, RECOV!

Reacting to coronavirus: working on problems and solutions as one strong community

In the light of all the necessary changes that were provoked by the coronavirus outbreak in the past few weeks, in the afternoon of March 18th, 2020 ALDA held a special open webinar on how to address the coronavirus crisis.
The webinar, which took place both in English and in Italian, aimed specifically to be an outlet for fruitful collective discussion and brainstorming: at this time more than ever, ALDA stands strongly alongside its members, partners, networks and friends, taking all the possible steps to foster connection and solidarity at European level and beyond, identifying both problems and possible solutions.
Both sessions were well participated and brought great inputs. The English session saw the contributions of LDA Delegate Sasa Marinkov from the Local Democracy Agency Central and Southern Serbia, in Knjaževac; Ruth-Marie Henckes, Advocacy & Communication Officer at the الشراكة الأوروبية من أجل الديمقراطية, of which ALDA is member; and Serena Foracchia, Managing Director of Reggio Children Srl.
Special guests of the Italian session, in turn, were Agostino Zanotti, founder of the ADL Zavidovici association, Brescia; Nina Zanotelli, Project Director at لا Piccionaia Theatre Productions, Vicenza; and Francesco Zarzana, President of the cultural association بروجيتارتي, in Modena as well as Member of the ALDA Governing Board.
In both webinars, as well, ALDA Secretary-General Antonella Valmorbida presented ALDA’s thoughts and strategic plans for the current situation and the near future, with an overview of the different scenarios that ALDA is implementing to react to the obstacles it’s facing. How to address the crisis, then?
Re-considering, re-modulating, extending, revising, re-connecting were some of the key words which, together with flexibility and resilience, marked Mrs Valmorbida’s intervention; and they found common ground in the other speakers’ interventions, too. As all speakers purposefully highlighted the difficulties they are facing and the solutions they are exploring, in fact, it became positively apparent that we are all united in the approach we are trying to take in response to the coronavirus crisis.
In Knjaževac, curfews and restrictions are accompanied by new services for the most vulnerable parts of the population, and the LDA is considering the use of podcasts, vlogs, e-democracy activities and online trainings to support its ongoing activities. At EPD, the staff is looking to adopt online platforms that best allow everybody to interact and keep the conversation going, and has already set up and online server and a video-conferencing schedule as well as specific group chats. Serena Foracchia suggested the interdependency and domino effect that connects the health issues, production issues and social issues we are facing – and hence the need to understand the value of our communities in their different facets, and to push forward with determination. Not to mention the warm intensity with which Agostino Zanotti, Nina Zanotelli, Francesco Zarzana bore testimony to the strain that the cultural sector is inevitably under in this situation, which in Italy started already three weeks ago.
In their (combined) words, today we are called to translate into facts a new awareness of our common social responsibilities; to accept that we must learn to adapt beyond our expectations; to act with strength despite how scared we may be.
We are very grateful to all speakers for their important contributions, and to the audience for clearly being eager to implement the proposed strategies and adapt them for their local needs. Perhaps, as remarked by ALDA President Oriano Otočan, what’s most important is that we are a community, and we are in this together with the firm belief that we can make it.

Mind Inclusion 2.0 awaits its first followers!

If this peculiar -to say the least- period has made something clearer in our minds, it is certainly that, more than ever, we need technology as a tool to reduce distance between people.
In order to get closer to their audience, indeed, the Mind Inclusion partners have decided to create a dedicated Facebook for the project, as well as the Mind Inclusion App!
The aim is for the page to be a platform where to communicate news on the project, the App, all related European Union actions, related initiatives for disabled persons, and so on – so to inform, disseminate news and communicate with the public more directly.
The project focuses on finding sustainable and inclusive solutions to help caregivers improve their skills, on one hand, and allow disabled individuals to participate in social life on the other hand. The App that the project is developing wishes to help the Intellectual Disabled Person to have access to public spaces and to exercise their rights.
العقل الشمولية 2.0 is a project funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission which started in November 2018. The project consortium gathers leading partner مارغريتا: Società Cooperativa Onlus (إيطاليا) مع معهد أبحاث Polibienestar, مؤسسة إنتراس (إسبانيا)، استشارات وبرامج تكنولوجيا المعلومات الاجتماعية Srl (إيطاليا), Lietuvos sutrikusio intelekto zmoniu globos bendrija «Viltis» (Lituania) and ALDA.

In these difficult days, all our thoughts go to all the people suffering and to the families of the victims, too many. Our mourning is infinite, and we keep it in our heart. We shall thank all those who work with dedication every day to heal the ill people, and those who keep the flow of goods circulating for the sake of the European families.
