The second international conference of the project BET ON EU, gathering 18 partner organisations, was held in Ravenna (Italy) on 14-16 April. On behalf the host city, the participants from 18 Western Balkan countries, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were greeted by Ms Martina Monti, Councillor in charge with Cooperation of Ravenna Municipality, and by Ms Valentina Morigi, Councillor in charge for International Relationships of the city.

The main topic of the conference “Rethinking the Balkans today: main challenges and perspectives” were presented by Ms Antonella Valmorbida, ALDA Secretary General, and by Prof. Federico Montanari, Professor of Semiotics of Media and Visual Communication of the University of Modena – Reggio Emilia.

The thematic session was dedicated to Western Balkan countries’. Experiences were shared from partner participants, as well as good practices in the field of engaging the local communities in the public debate related to the EU public policies, in order to help the EU integration process get closer to citizens, and ensure both transparency and ownership of the reforms.

The panelists from the Balkan countries were Jelena Vujovic (Municipality of Niksic, Montenegro), Dzeraldina Milicevic (Municipality of Zavidovici, Bosnia and Herzegovina), Dragan Milutinovic (Municipality Knjazevac, Serbia) and Goran Mitevski (Municipality Kumanovo, Macedonia).

During the field visit to the city of Ravenna, the participants could see a number of cultural heritage sites and institutions for social protection for migrants, funded by different EU programmes.
