Local Democracy Agency of Kosovo and Association of Trentino with Balkans together with Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency organised an event, aiming to create a cross-border ecological network for Kosovo and Montenegro.
***
The meeting took place on 23 – 26 October 2016 in the framework of project BorN – Biodiversity Protection and Development of the National Parks, funded by the European Union. Various workshops, institutional meetings and field trips for Kosovo and Montenegro participants will contribute into forming a cross-border network for a better ecological development of Bleshket, Nemuna and Prokletije areas. During the meeting, three core sets of elements were identified:
- “focal species” that show particular needs in terms of movement inside the territory;
- definition of the environmental matrix that characterizes the different geographical areas of the project territory;
- the elements that will make up the cross-border ecological network core areas, buffer zones, ecological corridors and stepping stones.
The activity aimed at creating the network, capable of producing a sufficient degree of “ecological permeability” in the project area. Such cross-states ecological cooperation is also designed to protect the existing links between the two National Parks and surrounding areas, avoiding two protected areas witnessing an unwanted “island effect”.
The C-B Ecological Network will also enable cooperation and sharing of the environmental data, policies of nature protection in view of their future homogenization between Kosovo and Montenegro. After the Cross-Border Ecological Network is established, a Map of the Ecological Cross Border Network and a Strategy paper will be promoted by the participants involved.
