ALDA organized the second transnational meeting of the project Crossroad of Regions – fostering involvement of all citizens in local life to Improve Social Cohesion (CRISCO) on 26-28 September in Strasbourg. The event was focused on the topic of prejudices and precarious individual situations and saw the involvement of more that 100 participants from 10 countries.
On the first day, the Strasbourg-based non-profit organization Makers For Change (MFC) organized one of their so-called “Positive Tours”. After being divided into three groups, participants were guided by local volunteers around Strasbourg and took part in three activities: a visit of the Hotel Graffalgar, a workshop at the associative gallery Art’Course, and the game Take one step forward.
The public conference took place in the morning of the second day, during which several speakers took the floor. Ms. Nawel Rafik-Elmrini, Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, discussed the issue of prejudices and stressed the importance of civil society in combating them and ensuring that human rights and dignity are not neglected. Ms. Muriel Mathieu from Plurielles, Mr. Cédric Bischetti from Makers For Change, Ms. Diane Merran from LICRA and Ms. Viviane Desportes from CRENO presented the work of their associations, sharing methods, models, challenges and successes.
Following the conference, participants engaged in the so-called “Tool Fair”, an open space with different stations, each one being dedicated to a specific organization. This format gave the opportunity to several organizations to present their practices and initiatives and learn form each other in an interactive and captivating way. In the last part of the day, participants played the game “Change of glasses” and came up with concrete recommendations around the topic, which will be included in the final publication of the project.
On the last day, project participants took a guided tour of the Council of Europe and were given a very interesting and in-depth presentation by Menno Ettema, Programme manager for cooperation projects on hate speech, hate crime and discrimination.
The 3-day programme allowed participants to exchange experience and take one step forward in achieving CRISCO project’s objectives. Partners will meet in Vejle, Denmark in January 2019 for the next event “Language barrier to integration”.
