Local Democracy Agency Subotica organised the marking of the Day of Europe, in cooperation with the City of Subotica, Youth Office of the City of Subotica and Italian Cultural Center “Piazza Italia”.

The event took place on the main square of Subotica where the citizens had the possibility to get informed about the EU and the process of Serbia’s accession to the EU.

This year’s event included the participation of young local artists who presented their artistic works of famous and important local figures of Subotica. This artistic performance was implemented through the activity “My City – Intercultural City” under the slogan “Serbia and EU: Culture that connects us” within the regional project “Balkan regional platform for youth participation and dialogue” which is funded by the EU. The aim of the activity was to strengthen the cultural participation of young people, through the promotion of intercultural dialogue.

“Day of Europe” commemorates the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration which was the first step towards the creation of today’s European Union. Former Minister of foreign affairs of France, Robert Schuman had presented the proposal of creating an organisation that would unite European countries in the production of coal and steel, strategic materials necessary for military power. This was the key to preventing any potential wars between European countries. Therefore, the Schuman Declaration was primarily an expression for strengthening peace, which we celebrate through Europe Day, as one of the symbols of the European Union.
