Promoting circular economy at the local level – the impact of the project WE-NET in Thiene

The City of Thiene, in partnership with Biosfera, have launched an educational process addressed to the students of the schools of the territory on the topic of circular economy and recycling. Through participative methodologies, students provided their views and opinions on how they see their city in 50 years-time ahead, while receiving inputs and feedback from experts. More than 100 students were directly targeted by the action and had the opportunity to provide inputs in a policy area strongly affecting their daily life by means of images, pictures and statements.

A Commission of experts led by Biosfera assessed the works produced by the students and the winners of the competition have been awarded on the 7th of April 2017 in the Municipality’s council chamber. Technological equipment has been donated to the schools “S. G. Bosco” di Rozzampia, “Talin” and “Bassani”, as winning prize of the work delivered by their students. The projects “Thiene in 50 years time” will be displayed to the public on the occasion of a free-entrance exhibition, held in the conference room of Palazzo Cornaggia.

Mr Andrea Zorzan, City councilor on Environment of the city of Thiene stated that “thanks to WE-NET, we have been able to involve local students in a positive initiative and this, in my view, has been one of the most significant outcomes among all local actions undertaken by the Local Administration. It has been difficult to select the winners among students’ works, considering the great commitment and passion they have put as well as the high quality of their outputs”.

The local path in Thiene is part of the WE-NET action. The initiative, supported by the Europe for Citizens programme, aims at promoting knowledge transfer on environmental protection, sustainable development and citizen mobilisation. It reunites local authorities and civil society associations from eight countries across wider Europe with the objective to establish a thematic platform of structured cooperation to exchange knowledge, experience and good practice on recycling and circular economy.
