The Human rights school for youngsters organized by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of the Republic of Macedonia (MHC) and the Institute for Human rights and Peace, Caen, Lower Normandy enabled 20 young people from Macedonia and France to share their thoughts on the subject of hate crimes on the basis of ethnicity and religion.

The multicultural atmosphere of this type of exchanges is very beneficial for young people, especially when it is regarding such sensitive issues as hate crimes. It is for that reason that this formation has been invaluable for young people from Macedonia and France. It is because of the quality of the concept which prevents the trivialization of this complex subject and also presents a reflection on the role of social media involving hate crimes that such formations can make a difference.
The activities of this programme are linked to the thematic of Human rights, specifically, the acceptance of differences, discrimination and hate crimes prevention mechanisms.
Adele Simon, one of the French participants stated that ethnic conflicts and tensions arise only when people are poorly educated. “Different generations see the problems differently. For example my parents and grandparents don’t have the same opinions as me on these subjects. They are not accustomed to the need of understanding other people’s religions and ethnicity because emigration arrived relatively late in France… And this is the result of a generation gap. Personally, I have no problems with differences” said Simon.
“I don’t care from which ethnicity originates a person who wants to be my friend”. It is in this way that the young Aleksandar Solev comments on the current situation in Macedonia regarding the incidents due to hate speech on the basis of ethnicity in which young people are frequently involved.
