ALDA is strategic partner of UNDP: working together for local governance and local development
ALDA and UNDP – Art programme signed an important Memorandum of Understanding on 17 July 2013 in Geneva, at the UN Headquarter. The agreement highlights the common features of the programmes, developping synergies in fostering cooperation at the local level between local authorities and civil society, and aims at the development of common projects and strategies.
In particular, a constant cooperation is on going with the office of UNDP in Brussels. Contacts have been established for joint initiatives in Albania and Kosovo where both ALDA and UNDP Art are present. ALDA participated in many events organised by UNDP Art on local development and local governance, using synergies at the community level between local authorities and civil society. Development are seen in Tunsia and Montenegro where actions from both organisations are present. Joint initiatives were organised during the recent Assisses of Decentralised cooperation of the Committee of the Regions in Brussels and ALDA representatives participated in a recent event for the programme Art in Morocco. A joint work will also be possible to enlarge the UNDP Art programme to Eastern Europe by using, in this case, the added value of ALDA and the LDAs.

Training for secretaries of the Local communities of Mostar. Trening za povjerenike Mjesnih zajednica Grada Mostara.
Local Democracy Agency (LDA) Mostar organize two-day training for secretaries of the Local Communities of the City of Mostar, as a part of the Project ”Improving local government services”. The topic of the training is “Importance and techniques of the planning process with the participation of citizens – (Participatory Planning Process).
Training will be held in Hotel Ero from 24 to 27 September 2013. Since the City of Mostar has 40 local communities, secretaries will be divided into two groups, for easy maintenance of the training.
Objectives of the project “Improving local government services” are to increase accountability of local authorities in the provision of public services, increase the quality of life through effective involvement of informed citizens in the design and implementation of local policies, based on the results of PULS’s methodology.
Specifični ciljevi:
1. Improve communication between citizens and councilors
2. Improve the capacity of local communities’ secretaries
3. Increase the awareness of the citizens about the competencies of local government The project is financially supported by the Open Society Fund BiH

Towards an LDA in Tunisia - Meeting of the working group on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in Trieste
A meeting of ALDA’s working group on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation was held on 10 September in Trieste, Italy.
On that occasion, the process of the development of our activities in the Med region were launched. Furthermore, it was an important step to investigate the possibility and moving towards the opening of a Local Democracy Agency in Tunisia, foreseen in 2014.
The coordinator of the working group, ALDA’s Vice President Alessandro Perelli from the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, hosted the meeting at the premises of the region. Some 25 participants from Italy, France, Albania and Tunisia attended, including the President of the Tunisian Association Lam Echaml, Mr Moncef Ben Slimane.

Round table about “European borders: European identity and enlargement policies meet the Western Balkans” (Frontiere d’Europa: identità europea e politica dell’allargamento alla prova dei Balcani occidentali).
The Resource and Development Unit Coordinator of ALDA, Marco Boaria will participate as a speaker to the event organised by “Movimento Punto Europa” on Tuesday 17th September. He will talk about the entry of Croatia in the European Union. The event will be hosted by the University of Trento, Department of Sociology. This meeting, within the project “Frontiere d’Europa”, is open to the public and will end with a theatrical performance “La scelta” by Marco Cortesi.

Supporting cross-border workers: InArco seminar in Bolzano
The Vice President of ALDA Alessandro Perelli participated in the seminar on cross-border work held in Bolzano, in Sud Tirol, Italy, on 13 September.
The seminar was organised by UIL International within the project InArco, of which ALDA is a partner. In his speech, Perelli highlighted ‘the importance of ensuring the best juridical protection to these workers who interest different European territories, within the promotion of democratic rights which ALDA and UIL share’.
Perelli also pointed out the problems of cross-border work in the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, particularly in Trieste, where many workers come from the nearby Slovenia and Croatia.
The project InArco is tailored to increase awareness of the existing laws affective cross-border workers, in order to improve the protection ensured by collective contacts.

The European Movement International visits ALDA headquarter
Within the framework of the week training session organised by the European Movement International Training Academy, a group of 5 students aged 19-26, coming from Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Spain and Switzerland, met ALDA’s staff of the Strasbourg office on Wednesday, 11 September.
The aim of the training is to learn more about European institutions such as the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Ombudsman.
Meeting ALDA staff at the headquarters in Strasbourg was an opportunity for getting to know more about other key stakeholders active at European level in promoting good governance and citizen participation.
Aldo Xhani, ALDA project manager, and Edina Dzogovic, ALDA project manager assistant, welcomed the students and provided them with a general overview of the organisation’s main traits and of its key projects granted by the European Commission under the Europe for Citizens and Youth in Action programmes..
The introduction was followed by a questions and answers session in which the participants required further information on ALDA’s activities. Special emphasis was put on the project POPEYE – Promoting Organic Production, Enhancing Youth Employment as coping with a topic of strong impact such as youth employment in rural areas.
