Promoting civil and economic rights of Algerian women
How to strengthen the civil and economic rights of Algerian women will be the focus of the seminar – training launched by ALDA, in cooperation with the Municipality of Monfalcone and the Ligue Algérienne pour la Défense des Droits de l’Hommes (LADDH), that will take place in Alger next Saturday, 26 April. The event will gather together women, representatives of women associations as well as representatives of local organisations promoting human rights and the social and economic inclusion of women in Algeria.
The training is a key step of the project ENSEMBLE, funded by the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia within the framework of the regional programme on Development Cooperation and International Partnership. The project envisages to strengthen the professional and entrepreneurial skills of women in the country as key element to foster the economic and social development at local level, mainly in rural and peripheral areas.
ALDA will bring in its expertise in the field by showcasing successful practices developed within its euro-Mediterranean cooperation framework. Particular attention will be given to the concept of citizen participation, core mission of ALDA since its establishment. Participants will reflect upon the relation between citizen participation and social and economic development with special focus on women. Mr Lucio Gregoretti, Head of Office on Tourism, Public Relations and International Affairs of the Municipality of Monfalcone and member of ALDA’s Governing Board, Mr Alessandro Perelli, Vice President of ALDA and Mr Aldo Xhani, ALDA project manager will be the keynote speakers of the event.

Local solutions for youth unemployment in the spotlight in Sisak
The conference „Nothing about us without us! Youth unemployment – Local solutions for global problem“ will take place on 23 April at 10:00 at the Town all of Sisak, in Rimska 26.
Organised by the Local Democracy Agency – Operational Partner Sisak, the Town of Sisak and the Association of Local Democracy Agencies, the event is part of the project „Active citizens combating youth unemployment“ in which Local Democracy Agency Sisak is the partner of the Carpathi, an Foundation Hungary, and is implementing in 6 European countries (Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, Czech Republic and Latvia).
We invite all those interested to attend the conference, which will have among the keynote speakers Mrs Paula Razan, Delegate of the LDA – OP Sisak, the President of ALDA Mr Oriano Otocan, and the Croatian Member of the European Parliament Mr Tonino Picula.
A comparative audiovisual research on youth unemployment problem was carried out in all 6 countries during the project, involving unemployed and employed youngsters aged 16-24, public sector, private sector and non-governmental organisations. The research in Croatia was focused on 3 towns (Sisak, Petrinja and Kutina) and it gathered 370 examinees by questionnaires and 26 by video interviews. During this conference we will present main findings of the research and gathered recommendations for each target group.
Youth unemployment affects the whole European Union, therefore it is necessary to involve citizens to tackle the issue. How ordinary citizens can contribute and influence decisions at the European Union level is also a key topic of this conference as well. Electing Croatian representatives in the European Parliament at the elections taking place on the 25 May 2014 is one of the ways. Why it is important to vote at the elections, how can Croatian MEPs influence decisions of the Parliament, and what is the concrete plan of the EU in combating youth unemployment, and how it reflects Croatian citizens, will be discussed by the Croatian MEP Mr. Tonino Picula.

The new edition of Corti and Cigarettes 2014 kicks off: the 7th edition of the Capital’s film festival that offers the Italian public a selection of the best short films of the international stage.

In 2014 the Festival will focus on Naturally Together, the section directed by Guido Orlandini and dedicated to the success stories of immigration.
The exhibition aims through film to support intercultural and interreligious dialogue, to deepen relations between the States bordering on the Mediterranean, creating insights into possible common policies. It ‘s the ideal place for short films that highlight the value and importance of economic relations , past and future policies between the European Union and the countries of the Euro -Mediterranean area, in addition to raising awareness of the territories , the places, the problems of the countries bordering the Mediterranean. The films must not necessarily be unpublished. The theme is free.

Europe for Citizens programme 2014-2020 officially adopted!
On 15 April, the Council of the European Union has unanimously adopted the Regulation setting up the ‘Europe for Citizens’ programme for the period 2014-2020.
ALDA has been looking forward to the adoption of the programme, as it is a key programme for our projects and activities – and this is why we are part of the Structured Dialogue with the European Commission.
By beginning of May, the programme guide that includes information on funding opportunities, application procedures and a calendar for the submission of applications will be published. The first deadline for submission of applications for town twinning projects, networks of twinned towns and remembrance projects is provisionally set for 4 June 2014; the second deadline for submission of applications for town twinning projects, networks of twinned towns and civil society projects is provisionally set for 1 September 2014.
For all our members interested in starting working on projects within the programme “Europe for Citizens” soon, we are also offering a master class tailored for the needs of local authorities and civil society organisations eager to develop projects on remembrance and civic participation.

2015 will be the European Year for Development – "Our world, our dignity, our future"
On 14 April, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council gave the green light to designate 2015 as the European Year for Development. The motto of the year will be “Our world, our dignity, our future”. ALDA welcomes this achievement.

The European Year for Development 2015 would be the first designated to a global theme. European years have been designated since 1983. 2015 is the year of expiry of the Millennium Development Goals, with many European Union states falling off track on anti-poverty aid targets.
The 2015 European Year of Development is a CONCORD initiative that was taken up, supported and co-developed by the EESC, the European Parliament and by Mr. Barroso, the president of the European Commission.
Marco Boaria, Responsible of ALDA Resources Unit, is a member of the Steering Committee of CONCORD Taskforce for EYD 2015. ALDA will be particularly involved in bridging 2013, the European Year of Citizen, which is continuing in 2014 with the implementation of the recommendations drafted, to 2015. ALDA’s work to promote citizens’ participation and good local governance is crucial to ensure sustainable development worldwide.

For a creative and inclusive Europe - Training 'Growing Steps'
Two representatives of ALDA participated in the training Growing Steps, to promote the participation of youngsters by improving their capabilities in civil society organisations.

Participants coming from European and Neighbouring countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech republic, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine) exploited the potential of creativity, entrepreneurship by using different techniques in order to strengthen their sense of solidarity, self-confidence and reflexion. Trough a non-formal educational methods, workshops and some group activities participants coming from different countries and ethnic backgrounds met and shared experiences and acquired new competences.
The study visits in Palermo, to the CESIE headquarter and to the association Libera against mafia were particularly interesting. The creative workshops on “How could be the city of your dreams…” and on “How could you create a strong advertisement for your idea” were particularly interactive: participants made videos, prepared poster and acted.
The “Partners’ Café” gave the participants the opportunity to propose thematic open spaces of debate on: social impact of the YiA trainings, ecology and respect of the environment, art as on the most important instruments of communication, the importance to experience other cultures.

Our President Oriano Otočan officially opened ALDA new office in Brussels on 10 April, as part of a wider cooperation with the European Project Association – EPA.
The new office of ALDA in Brussels is at the Rue de la Science 14b. The cooperation with EPA, actively promoting project developments with hundreds of stakeholders in Europe, will allow both organizations to share competences and expertise and possible project ideas.
The opening cerimony took part during a three-days international event of the project WTD – Working Together for Development, with the presence of the international partners and associates.

Verso le elezioni per il Parlamento Europeo - incontro a Roma, lunedì 14 aprile
Partecipa all’incontro organizzato dal Consiglio Italiano del Movimento Europeo, Democracy International e ALDA per confrontarsi e discutere insieme su come rilanciare un processo costituente in un’Europa vittima di numerosi democratica.

L’Unione Europea sta cercando faticosamente di affrontare dei percorsi per diminuire il deficit democratico che da sempre la caratterizza. Un deficit che rende le istituzioni europee incapaci di affrontare con prontezza e legittimità le sfide che la storia impone. I Capi di Stato e di Governo sembrano pensare di poter condurre i negoziati per la riforma delle istituzioni europee senza trasparenza, aggravando la mancanza di partecipazione e consenso intorno ai processi decisionali europei, di fatto allontanandosi dai cittadini e dalle loro espressioni associative.
È perciò tempo d’agire. Anche in continuità con le numerose attività portate avanti nel quadro dell’Alliance of the European Year for Citizens 2013, serve una vera e propria campagna di dimensioni europee, già avviata con operazioni di lobby fra un vasto network di organizzazioni, con la messa a punto di piattaforme d’informazione via web e con l’ideazione di specifiche campagne di azioni pubbliche ad alto impatto. Occorrerà mettere in campo uno sforzo cooperativo enorme per generare la pressione capace davvero di incidere sul processo costituente.
L’incontro Democratic Europe Now è l’occasione per partecipare ad un primo incontro nazionale su questi temi, in modo da illustrare quanto da ciascuno già messo in cantiere e discutere su come lavorare insieme ed elaborare idee innovative e strumenti di comunicazione che ci permettano di essere efficaci presso le istituzioni e l’opinione pubblica nella battaglia per il mandato costituente e per la convenzione costituente per rafforzare la democrazia in Europa.
Il primo incontro si terrà a Roma, Lunedì 14 Aprile, dalle ore 10.00 alle ore 13.00, presso Sala Riunioni CSV/SPES Lazio – Via Liberiana, 17.
