Make a change and work in a cultural and environmental center in Northern Italy
Our member ARCI Servizio Civile Vicenza has great plans for the year ahead, and to implement all the activities they have in mind they are looking for a motivated young volunteer from Austria, Croatia or Slovenia!
The volunteer will work in Porto Burci, a cultural and environmental center, located in the heart of the city if Vicenza, in Italy, a very lively space which organizes training courses, workshops, movie screenings, exhibitions, conferences and small concerts. The volunteers will be in charge of welcoming the people coming to Porto Burci and encouraging their direct involvement to support the development of their ideas.The activities will take place 5 days a week, for a total of 30 hours, and could be divided into:
- reception, support and welcoming to the centre, providing information, setting up the rooms, assisting in the usage of technical equipment
- promotion of Arci Servizio Civile and Porto Burci: social media, website, flyers, pictures, videos (on- and off-line communication)
- ESC lab: promotion, public meetings, and information about volunteering projects
- the development of a personal project addressed to the community

Civil Service in ALDA offices – Apply before October 10th
ALDA is looking for young Italian people, or foreigner living in Italy, ready to start a Civil Service experience in the field of local democracy, peace and to promote the cooperation with the countries of the enlarged Europe.
This call, supported by the Municipality of Cremona, is within the framework of the LED project: Lighting Europe and Democracy and it aims at introducing young volunteers into the wide range of activities carried on by ALDA, in order to give them the opportunity to contribute to the process of cooperation and promotion of good local governance in the European Union, the Mediterranean area, the Balkans and in Eastern Europe.
The six selected volunteers will work in ALDA offices in Brussels, Strasbourg and Skopje, thus working consistently with the thematic focus of each team: more specifically supporting democracy in Europe and Eastern Europe for the ones in Brussels’ office, in the Mediterranean area for volunteers working from Strasbourg and in the Balkans for those located in Skopje.
The volunteers will assist the work of the project managers and they will be able to develop key competencies and professional skills in the field of project cycle management of a European project, as well as in communication, looking further into the theme of international cooperation supporting democracy at the local level.
The volunteers will receive an initial training provided by ALDA and our partners, in order to acquire the needed knowledge to kick-off their work experience in the best way!

The conclusions and recommendation of the forum “Partnership as key for Local Democracy – Rethinking the cooperation between local authorities and civil society” just arrived.

“Society with a soul” – RECOV presentation in Rauna, Latvia
From September 16th to 18th, 2019 in the Municipality of Rauna, Latvia, the results of the RECOV project were presented during the traditional local event “Society with a soul”. Different stakeholders from Rauna and from other parts of Latvia shared their experiences on how to get involved in social activities and invite others to participate.
During this second local event, the participants were surveyed on how to substantially strengthen the capacity of advocacy in the civil society sector and to promote the development of NGOs with a civic role: how to promote public participation?
This activity is part of the RECOV project: REthinking COllaborative Values for Public Services, supported by the European program Europa za građane.
From September 16th to 18th, 2019 in the Municipality of Rauna, Latvia, the results of the RECOV project were presented during the traditional local event “Society with a soul”. Different stakeholders from Rauna and from other parts of Latvia shared their experiences on how to get involved in social activities and invite others to participate.

FromMEtoEU – Volunteers’ Meeting!
Within the second phase of the project FromMEtoEU – I need (E)U, (E)U needs Me, ALDA’s volunteers officially started their mission!
FromMEtoEU – From Migrants Engagement to European Upgrade is a project funded by EU, through the Europe for Citizens programme. ALDA is one of the partners of the project FromMEtoEU that aims to create opportunities for European citizens and Migrants’ communities to work together and to promote a new idea of a multicultural Europe.
The vision of the project lies in the idea that democracy can be built up only by Citizen’s engagement, therefore the second phase of the project involves 5 selected volunteers for delivering interviews to migrants and EU citizens! The purpose of the interviews is understanding which are people’s needs, and how is it possible to get suggestions of mutual help from the community of Brussels.
The variegate group of young and enthusiastic volunteers involved by ALDA met last Saturday, 14th September 2019, at ALDA’s office, in Brussels! During the meeting, the volunteers discussed about the project’s goal and how to start the action; it was a moment of interesting exchanges of thoughts and opinions!
Our volunteers already started to actively collect the video-interviews that will result in an amazing video. You will be invited watch the final video about volunteer’s interviews during the next Local Event of the FromMEtoEU which will be held in November in Brussels!

ALDA, AGA and our members at the Tocatì Festival: a perfect - participative - day!
The most captivating thing is that such a combination exists, and it has a name: Tocatì festival, the International Festival of Street Games,
The Festival, in its 17th edition, took place from September 12th to 15th in the historical city of Verona, organized by AGA, the Association of Ancient Games and this year its receipt was spiced up with a hint of…participative democracy!In fact, being the latter a member of our network, we jointly decided to seize the opportunity and to organize a day of activities designed to our members and their families: a great deal combining networking with entertainment.
The chosen date was Saturday, September 14th. The day started at the Museum of Natural History, with a reunion of ALDA members from Italy, followed by a conference animated by Imislawa Gorska, Francesco Zarzana, Maurizio Camin, Eva Trentin and Marco Boaria. After the opening and presentation by Ms. Gorska, Vice President of ALDA Governing Board, which also Brough the greetings from the President Mr. Oriano Otocan and the Secretary-General Ms. Antonella Valmorbida, Mr Zarzana, President of Progettarte Association and member of the Governing Board, spoke about the importance of culture as element promoting dialogue, which in turn is the essence of every participatory experience and distinctive feature of active citizenship. Mr. Camin, Director of Trentino con I Balcani Association (ATB) and member of the Board, moved the attention to the Balkans as an example of decentralized cooperation: an important highlight to remember where ALDA comes from and the present situation of the region, too often forgotten by media.
Recalling the origin of ALDA, the discussion moved to one of the key events on the agenda fort the next year: the celebrations for ALDA 20th Anniversary. While detailed information about the General Assembly will be disclosed in the following months, Ms. Trentin, Membership Officer, presented new initiatives we have started to carrying out in order to promote and enhance our members and network, among which we mention the much expected “ALDA Talks” – a series of thematic high-level webinars thought to spread the unique competences of our members.
The meeting was closed with the intervention of Mr. Boaria, ALDA+ Ceo and Head of R&D Unit, who explained the whole set of services for our members.
The day continued with a guided tour through the city and the Festival, open to members’ families and children, while the afternoon was dedicated to an. Open event held in the Civic Library of Verona: a World Café titled “Active citizenship vs. Public spaces”. The 30 participants who joined us at 3pm were organized around tables of discussions: four “stops” to talk about 4 aspects of active participation to make our cities more welcoming place to spend time in. Every table was animated by a staff member of ALDA, Sofia, Lavinia, Elisabetta and Francesco. The outcome of the almost two hours of conversation has overcome all expectations: a warm atmosphere of positive exchange was established, and all the participants enjoyed contributing to the process. The results of the action are a bunch of great ideas on the use of public existing spaces in a most fructuous way benefiting the citizens and promoting culture and socialization. ..We will surely take them into consideration for our future project, and we don’t exclude the birth of a working group to implement a couple of ideas!

Balkan Network for Local Democracy first governing board meeting in Serbia
The Governing Board of the Balkan Network for Local Democracy (BNLD) was held in Knjazevac, Serbia, from 10 to 12 September 2019. This was the first meeting of the Governing board after the legal establishment of the Network.
The BNLD members, ALDA and LDAs from Western Balkan countries used this opportunity to discuss a variety of questions important for the Network, such as fundraising plan, visibility, partnerships for the network as well as the internal structuring of the network.
During the meeting chaired by the President of the BNLD, Mr. Elbert Krasniqi, the GB members were briefed about the registration process and all the technical issues by the Executive director, Ms. Ivana Petrovska. The discussions during the meeting also included policy making issues of significance for the network as well as sharing ideas for projects and future activities. The next meeting of BNLD will take in Pristina in November where will be organized the official public launching of the Network.
Balkan Network for local democracy (BNLD) is a Network created by ALDA and the LDAs from Western Balkan countries with the mission to promote local democracy and regional cooperation in the perspective of EU integration of the Western Balkans through the empowerment of civil society and local authorities. The Network was registered in Skopje in June 2019.

Help the project APPROACH for a better integration of EU mobile citizens: fill the survey!
The project Approach has already helped many EU mobile citizens across Europe to better integrate into the social and political life of their receiving communities.
A lot of work to better understand the life and reality of EU citizens living abroad has been already done, with focus groups, for example, and with other forms of consultation. However, we want now to go one step further with a survey to find solutions to major obstacles for EU mobile citizens and make their lives easier.
Our survey takes only few minutes to complete and it’s available in several European languages, we think it will be a unique insight on real and day-to-day challenges faced by EU mobile citizens and an invaluable tool for us, and our partners, to better shape our activities to meet real needs!
