ALDA organized a meeting at the Italian Embassy of Kosovo in cooperation with the Local Democracy Agency of Kosovo, and their long-time Italian partner “Trentino con i Balcani”.

The event was supported by Mr Lutfi Haziri, Mayor of Gjilan and Board member of ALDA, and by the Associations of Mayors of Kosovo. Over twenty mayors and representatives of national civil society participated, as well as representatives of the European Union office in Kosovo.

It is a crucial moment for Kosovo in terms of local governance and decentralization as the path to promote social and economic development. Some of the major issues concerning local governance are environment protection and waste management, youth unemployment, and inter-municipality cooperation.

The LDA Kosovo and the association Trentino con i Balcani are working on economic development with the creation of Platform 125, gathering companies from the area of Trento (Italy), interested to invest in Kosovo.
The Secretary General of ALDA Antonella Valmorbida presented the European programme Europe for Citizens, which represents a great opportunity for national stakeholders, and raised a lot of interest. The programme is a light in the tunnel of approaching the EU, since Commissioner Hahn confirmed that the visa-free regime to Kosovo will be postponed to 2020 despite the fact that almost all the requirements were achieved by the country.

ALDA remains committed to supporting decentralization and local democracy in Kosovo, as key components for the stabilization and development of the country, and of the Balkan area. At the same time, we strongly support EU Enlargement in the region.
Mr Haziri highlighted the important role of ALDA and of the LDA Kosovo, and confirmed the commitment of municipalities of Kosovo to be involved in the European network of the Association.
Elbert Krasniqi, Delegate of the LDA Kosovo, presented their work, particularly on youth, stressing the need of never giving up, despite difficulties.
