The Steering Committee of the project “PAL – Fighting discrimination and anti-Gypsyism in education and employment in EU” met on 4-6 October in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

The Mayor of Reggio Emilia, Luca Vecchi, welcomed the international delegation of the two-year project in the “Sala del Tricolore”, where Italian flag was born. Mr. Vecchi highlighted the historical tradition of openness to diversity and dialogue of the city, whcih closely resembles the objectives of the project.
A number of Italian good practices in the field of inclusion of Roma and Sinti population were presented to the audience. This inspiring moment was concluded with the words of Matteo Sassi, Vice Mayor for Social Welfare of Reggio Emilia: “From bad politics and from bad discourse, nothing good can arise. And before entering politics, populism is a widespread mood. For this, we should not tolerate any kind of discriminations, in our communities”.
While project PAL will be completed at the end of 2017, these words remind us that our efforts towards inclusion and empowerment of all citizens need to be the core of our action.
The city of Reggio Emilia, internationally renown as en excellency of good local governance, has a long tradition of cooperation with ALDA. Member of the Association for over a decade, Reggio Emilia has been involved in several projects and activities promoting local participation.
