The VOICES FROM THE FUTURE project aims to touch upon the existent inequalities and unfairness in societies that are experiencing a harsh economic and political transition towards the democracy after years of authoritarian regime. A Western Balkan country – The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia shares a similar destiny with its neighbours characterised by divisions which have a strong impact on the individual’s place in a society. Growing social and economic inequalities have led to visible dividing lines between the winners and the losers of the transition, the oppressors and the oppressed. The Social Community Theatre approach combining interventions from both civil society and cultural associations tackles the present social context in order to help open up perspectives for a better future. This event will rely on the three theatrical forms of the THEATRE OF THE OPRESSED of Augusto Boal, especially focusing on Forum theatre, thus providing a wide range of empowerment tools for the vulnerable groups in local communities in Skopje and other cities across the country.

The CARAVAN Next MICRO EVENT programme will start with lectures and workshops that will introduce the local public to the Theatre of the oppressed by Augusto Boal, the Brazilian theatre director, playwright, theoretician, author, educator, and politician. The three basic categories of the Theatre of the oppressed will be analysed: Theatre of images, Invisible theatre, and Forum theatre. These approaches, constantly overlapping and providing space for the thematic interconnectivity will be applied to address four key challenges through the main topics of the entire MICRO event Skopje: 1) Theatre for Building bridges of dialogue; 2) Welcome to reality; 3) Human rights vs. oppression; 4) Civic culture for change.

The lectures, workshops and theatre performances will last for four days (14-18 March 2018) and will be held at KINO KULTURA http://www.kinokultura.org.mk and other locations in Skopje and in other cities. The participants will be invited to apply through an online registration system for interactive workshops and public debates. The performances of the actors, which will follow the workshops, will be held at different locations and in proximity of communities experiencing discrimination. Some of the locations will be announced beforehand, while others will be held without any prior announcement and will be implemented in the pure format of the Theatre of the oppressed (Invisible theatre).
The main partners in organising the MICRO EVENT in Skopje are the ALDA Office in Skopje (www.alda-europe.eu, Theatre Navigator Cvetko (http://www.kinokultura.org.mk/category/theatre-navigator-cvetko) and Lokomotiva – Center for New Initiatives in Arts and Culture (http://old.lokomotiva.org.mk).
The workshops and theatre events will be facilitated by Prof. Zoja Buzalkovska, Professor of Acting at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje, theatre director and journalist.
