ALDA General Assembly 2019 took place in a particularly sensitive moment for the whole European Community. Only one week prior to the European Parliament Elections, when all the efforts to raise awareness on the importance of every single vote came to its end.
Within this framework, we all have been delighted to welcome Mr. Yves Bertoncini, President of the European Movement – France and Vice-President of the European Movement – International, to our Assembly, in Caen, on May 17th.
Mr Bertoncini’s experience and expertise in European issues is also proved by his long career as writer and teacher in some of the most prominent Institutes, such as Mines Paris Tech, Collège d’Europe of Bruges, Sciences Po Paris and the Ecole Nationale d’Administration. He is also author of numerous books, articles and policy papers on European issues, with a specific focus on institutional, political and civic questions.
His intellectual deepness and professional experiences were clearly expressed by his inspiring words during ALDA General Assembly, which encouraged all participants to believe in the European Union concrete uniqueness, in its roots and values, which must have been defended by our active participation as European citizens. He underlined the crucial importance of the upcoming European elections for the entire destiny of the Union itself and its society. Our active and conscious participation in EU political life at local level is essential for implementing the original EU project, designed to guarantee peace and prosperity among peoples, at the light of democracy, solidarity and respect for fundamental human rights. “Sometimes the abstention rate may be significant, but it doesn’t undermine the legitimacy of the European Union, (…) which may appear distant, but it has a significant impact on the people and the best placed to bring this message are local authorities”.
