The month of May looks already far, and with it the European Parliament Elections. After the hard work carried out by partners and volunteers of the CROSS OVER project during the pre-elections period, now local activities give way to new and tangible questions on the future of the Union.
In light of this, the sixth and last international project’s event, hosted by the city of Gdańsk between 8th and 9th July, opened up with a session of group discussions regarding the turnout of the elections in each country involved, being Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Italy, Malta, Sweden and Denmark. If on the one hand the participation rate increased in almost all the nations, this cannot be said for Italy and Malta. Partners then worked together to formulate questions about the post-elections path and the consequences of the results on the main European issues going forward: raising awareness on the impact of European policies at the national level, bridging the gap between MEPs and their constituents, the role and consequences of disinformation, fake news and hate speech…
The activities continued with a debate between Ms Magdalena Adamowicz, newly elected member of the European Parliament, and Ms Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, mayor of the city of Gdańsk, moderated by Mr Maximilian Kieturakis, from Wszystko dla Gdańska. Next, the accent was put to examples of positive promotion of European values: the Vote4Friendship campaign organized by Alliance 4 Europe represented by Ms Maia Mazurkiewicz and the Weź Zagłosuj (Go Vote) campaign organized by the Metropolitan Area Gdańsk Gdynia Sopot represented by Mr Michał Glaser. Finally, project partners had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of democratic processes and citizenship engagement both at national and European levels during a visit to the European Solidarity Centre which commemorates the Solidarność movement and the anti-communist democratic opposition in Poland and throughout the world.

The CROSS OVER project is co-funded by the Europe for Citizens programme. The project aims at encouraging young people to reflect on political accountability through increased participation in the elections for the European Parliament. The basic idea of the project is to devise and stimulate actions that will effectively solve the lack of interest of youth in voting at the European level.
