On 4th June Local Democracy Agency in Subotica  (LDA Subotica) organised a local path activity within the project VALID – European Cities – Strengthening Common Values of Solidarity and Intercultural Dialogue funded by the Europe for Citizens Programme.

The event focused on the topic of exercising the right of citizens to participate in the adoption and creation of public policies as well as the prospects for the development of local self-government, good and responsible governance at the local level, with the principles of intercultural and social dialogue.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss local policy actions to improve the culture of participation, while focusing on intercultural dialogue

Representatives of CSOs, academia, local institutions as well as citizens gathered to elaborate the prospects of local democracy and pathways for improving citizen’s participation in the local community. The objective of the meeting was to discuss local policy actions of importance for improving the culture of participation, while focusing on intercultural dialogue.

More into depth, participants discussed the need of more inclusive approaches of citizen’s participation in policy making emphasising, as well, the Citizens forum as a possible mechanism for dialogue with the local government.  Local initiatives on relevant topics to the citizens were mentioned as effective tools to increase participation and citizens’ engagement. Similarly, art and culture were emphasised as important instruments in facilitating dialogue and participation which can be further used in the next stages of the project.

Increasing intercultural and social approaches in policy design and decision making process is the focal point of VALID project which will be implemented during the year.
