A wonderful trip in the culture and history of Patras was experienced by the participants of two seminars entitled “Museum – City – Monument: Intercultural Routes in Patras” which were organized in the city for celebrating the 2018 International Migrant’s Day.
The Directorate of Antiquities of Achaia – Ministry of Culture, the Directorate of Secondary Education of Achaia Prefecture – Dpt. of Cultural Themes, the Directorate of Elementary Education of Achaia Prefecture, the Dpt. of Cultural Projects and the Municipality of Patras joined forces and organized the seminars as part of the implementation of the cultural network entitled “Patras, a city, a multi-story route” formed during 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage. Through the contact with selected mosaics, sculptures and monuments of the city, the participants got acquainted with the aspects of the multiculturality of Patras in Roman times, which was an important multinational and cosmopolitan centre; this with the aim to understand and interpret the current intercultural identity of the city.
At the same time, an emphasis was put on diversity, democracy, solidarity and universal fundamental values such as justice, equality and non-discrimination. The seminars included the presentation of the actions of the network and experimental workshops guided by museologists and painters. The first seminar took place on the 14th of December and was dedicated to teachers, tutors and professors who will then implement intercultural projects in their educational institutes targeting youngsters and young adults. The second was directed to some of the local civil society stakeholders, with migrants associations playing the main role, as, in 2019, they will co-design actions inspired by the values of “Patras, a city, a multi-story route” initiative.
The overall action will be finalised in summer 2019 with the implementation of parallel events and exhibitions at the Archaeological Museum of Patras, in the context of the celebrations of its ten-year anniversary and in the light of a holistic approach to the intercultural heritage of Patras.
This action has to be seen in the context of Patras’ accession to the “InterCultural Cities” network, a program supported by the Council of Europe, and of its integration in the network of ALDA, the European Association for Local Democracy.
