ALDA is proud to announce the opening of the first Local Democracy Agency (LDA) in the Mediterranean area.

***

The LDA will be based in Kairouan, in Tunisia, and it is the outcome of a long process of reflection and cooperation. At the same time, it will constitute a starting point towards the creation of a LDAs network in Northern Africa. The inauguration of the LDA will mark an important step for Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, and reinforce our efforts for democracy and good governance in the country, as well as in the region.

The official opening ceremony will be held on 27 April in Kairouan. Representatives from European and local partners of the LDA will participate, together with international and local actors working for democracy in Tunisia.

A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, initiator of the LDA programme, and by partners of the Agency: the City of Strasbourg, France; Fons Mallorqui, Spain; Auxilia, Italy; Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Italy; and several local partners. The partnership will work together and create a platform for cooperation, dialogue and mutual exchange of experience in all aspects (cultural, social and economic) between local communities and communities of European partners.

Capacity building of local authorities and civil society, the involvement of youth and women, exchange of good practices between local actors, and promotion of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation will be among the future activities of the 13th LDA.

An action plan, including priorities, will be identified and adopted for 2017. The LDA will be soon fully operational, once the delegate leading it will be recruited.
