10 years from the EU enlargement: ALDA celebrates at the Council of Europe with ambassadors, members and partners
On 5 June, ALDA organized the celebration of the 10 years since the big enlargement of the European Union in 2004. Given that many active members and partners of the association come from the countries which joined the Union in 2004, celebrating the achievements of this crucial step, both for the involved countries and for the EU as a project, was a must.
Several members of ALDA gave their contributions on what it means to be a European Citizens, and how this status adds up to their national citizenship, completing it. After the words of Mr Andreas Kiefer, Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the President of ALDA Oriano Otocan gave a short speech about the meaning of European citizenship, the recent elections, and the need for a stronger and more united Europe.
Ambassadors of many of the 10 countries contributed to the celebrations - speeches were given by H.E. Mr Robert Drzazga, Chargé d'affaires of the Republic of Poland to the Council fo Europe, H.E. Mr Tomáš Boček, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to the Council of Europe, H.E Mr Drahoslav Štefánek, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to the Council of Europe, H.E. Mr Ferenc Robák, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to the Council of Europe, H.E. Mr Damjant Bergant, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Slovenia to the Council of Europe, and H.E. Mr. Joseph Filletti, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Malta to the Council of Europe.
The celebration was organized in the framework of the final international conference of the project Working Together for Development - WTD, coordinated by ALDA and bringing together over 20 partners and associates from the enlarged Europe. It was hosted by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, headquarter of ALDA.
