ALDA at the European Fair

On Sunday, 7th September 2014, Biljana Zasova, Francesco Coscione and Kevin Cradden from ALDA took part in ‘La Foire Européenne’ or European Fair which is held annually in Strasbourg. The fair boasts over a thousand exhibitors, all attempting to advertise their wares to as big an audience as possible, and attracts many visitors from the city and elsewhere.

Our stand was shared with that of the Région Alsace and we had several members of the Parlement Alsacien des Jeunes (Alsatian Youth Council) which kindly helped with the implementation of our project: Leaders (Local Environments: Active Development of Environmentally Responsible Societies). This is the first local activity of the project following on our meeting in Recoaro Terme (Italy) in June this year.

At the fair, we engaged with the passers-by on the topic of recycling on the most local level: in the home. This was done by means of a handy questionnaire that posed some pertinent questions to people on these important issues. Ten questions appeared on the questionnaire with ‘points’ awarded for good practices; these points could then be added up on order to give a total score ranging from 0-10 with 8-10 being the bracket required in order for the accolade of ‘Eco-Citizen’ to be awarded.

Lower scores translated into other categories such as On the Right Track (5-8 points) and More Effort Needed (0-5 points). Below the questions, people could find some tips on recycling which could be useful especially for those who fall into the latter two categories. Moreover, people’s responses and scores allowed for some fruitful discussion as not everybody agrees on what are the most important practices to be followed.

It was a pleasant, interesting day at the fair and hopefully it made a contribution to changing people’s attitudes towards waste disposal and recycling in the home.
