“Europe’s Unstable Eastern Neighborhood: What Role for Civil Society?” - Meeting held in Brussels
Marco Boaria, Head of resources and development unit at ALDA, participated to the event “Europe’s Unstable Eastern Neighborhood: What Role for Civil Society?” promoted by the European Partnership for Democracy in cooperation with with the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaP CSF), the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU and the Václav Havel Library which took place in Brussels on the 18th of November.
The conference - held in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) Review - mainly focused on the challenges of civil society in the Eastern Partnership countries, challenges which ALDA highly contribute to face thanks to the numerous projects and initiatives it develop in all the EaP countries also through the three Local Democracy Agencies established on the field in Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine.
Former Ministries (Volodymyr Ogrysko, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ukraine, and Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili, Former Minister for Reintegration, Georgia) as well as civil society representatives (Rostislav Valvoda, Director of Prague Civil Society Center, Czech Republic; Iryna Shvets, Civic Network OPORA, Ukraine; Boris Navasardyan, Yerevan Press Club, Armenia) provided relevant hints and updates on the EaP, contributing to answer to key questions which concern the addressed countries: what are the tendencies for civil society Eastern Partnership countries? What are Eastern partnership countries’ needs and expectations from the EU and the Eastern Partnership? What should be the EU´s role vis-à-vis civil society in Eastern partnership countries? Is EU engagement efficient? What is the role of the EU, when faced with assertive Russian policies towards its neighbours?
ALDA is more and more engaged in the EaP dimension and will continue strengthening its actions to support EaP civil society and local governance reforms in the area, acting thus as one of the relevant actor in the European discourse.
