ALDA at the Partnership Forum 2017 to strengthen the cooperation between the EU, CSOs and LAs
ALDA’s Secretary General, Antonella Valmorbida, participated in the Partnership Forum 2017 organized by the European Commission on 6-7 July.
The Partnership Forum 2017 – Strengthening and deepening our Partnership worldwide with Civil Society and Local Authorities – took place in Brussels on 6-7 July 2017 to revitalize the global partnership for the sustainable development (SDG 17).
Antonella Valmorbida, ALDA’s Secretary General, shared ALDA’s experience in the session “Inclusive local economic development: shaping an ecosystem to counter rising inequalities”. Valmorbida stressed the importance of local democracy to tackle inequalities and to sustain local economic development. Indeed, she emphasised the fact that economic development and sustainable development are part of the same process and that they are not consequent, but rather they go hand-in-hand.
She subsequently highlighted the importance of supporting democratically elected leaders and strong local authorities, as well as of an active and vivid engaged civil society as a means of development. She pointed out that a particular focus of the local authorities should be dedicated to the development of practices and ways to engage and support participative democracy throughout a multi-actor approach that places local development and decentralisation not on the margins, but at the centre of the national development plan. Valmorbida mentioned some of the best practices adopted in different countries (Macedonia, Algeria and Ukraine), and the work carried out by the LDAs aimed at empowering citizens, including marginalised groups. Finally, she emphasised that sustainability is not only environmental but also social, and that ALDA is fully dedicated towards this direction.
The panel was rich in content and very valuable, also thanks to the contributions of other high-level speakers, namely Mr. Germain Caballero Vargas (Mayor of the municipality of San Jos de Chiquito), Mr. Dirk Vansintjan (President REScoop.eu), Mr. Jean-Pierre Elong M’Bassi (Secretary General of United Cities and Local Government Africa – UCLG-A), and Mr. Michel Laloge (Unit Civil society, Local Authorities – European Commission).
