Peer mentorship for rural development: project JOURNEY's capacity building in action!

The Erasmus + project JOURNEY – Joint Organization to Unite Rural Networks of Entrepreneurial Youth aims at training a team of mentors to engage rural youth through new teaching methods.

From June 25th to June 28th 2019 Giorgia Signoretto and Benedetta Morari – project development assistants at ALDA Vicenza - participated to the second meeting of Mobility of Youth Workers in Lowicz, Poland. The gathering entailed a full week of activities (from Sunday, June 24th to Saturday, June 29th) for a group of 19 youth workers from Ukraine (7), Georgia (6), and Azerbaijan (6). The aim of the program is indeed to allow youth workers from these countries to acquire mentorship skills as well as knowledge, methods, and tools to support rural youth and young entrepreneurs.

ALDA proposed a training focused on project development: as a matter of fact, the mentors are asked to develop projects with the goal of engaging youth in rural communities. The workshop provided them with some useful tools to understand a community’s issues and needs, to think solutions to fulfill such needs and to implement them effectively. The session started with warm-up activities, then the specific training on project development was divided in three parts: the identification of a community’s needs, the development of the project, and its implementation.

Parallel to that, we presented a case study, ALDA’s Balkan Regional Platform for Youth Participation and Development. We addressed several instruments which are usually used to develop a project in its different stages, such as Maslow’s Pyramid of Basic Needs, the SWOT analysis, the SMART approach, the Stakeholder Engagement Model, as well as techniques of community engagement. At the end, after a moment of sharing and conclusion, a questionnaire was presented to the participants, who expressed their enthusiasm towards the day’s activity. Through the use of the tools presented, they felt well-equipped to successfully develop projects to engage youth in their communities.
