Thousand facets of tourism in Novo Mesto - with CUT project
The discovery of local beauties and the promotion of cultural heritage continues as the CUT project - Culture Twinning: Twinning Tourism Promoting Cultural Heritage - keeps going on. The last stop of the CUT journey was in Slovenia, in the lovely city of Novo Mesto, situated in the southeastern part of the country, not far from the Croatian border. There, at the end of June, project partners gathered with a precise objective: discover all the beauties and the opportunities that the city and the region around reserve for tourists. Our guides in this field-mission were both the representative of the Municipality of Novo Mesto, the Development Center Novo Mesto (Razvojni Center Novo Mesto) and the recently renovated Tourist Information Center. They accompanied us through the old town, revealing a number of ancient monuments, among which the Franciscan monastery, its precious library and the Church of S. Nikolai. We then explored the shores of the Krka river where we enjoyed a canoa ride. During the project meeting two recurrences took place: the Anniversary of the partnership between the Municipalities of Novo Mesto and Vilafranca del Penedès and the Feast of Situlae – the festival of Iron age life and cuisine.
On the other hand, the overall event was primarily meant to be a time for reflection and exchange of good practices on innovative methods to feed what we may define sustainable and “smart” tourism. This indicates a tourism not for its own sake, but aimed at discovering the real treasure each place preserves, linked to history, environment and traditions. According to partners and participants to the event, “the experience in Novo Mesto was useful and the agenda well planned: discovering local monuments and traditions arises both a sense of wonder and familiarity, because we may find out several common traits linking this foreign place to our own reality”.
