EESC HEARING ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LISBON TREATY. (Brussels, 17 April 2012)
Mrs. Antonella Valmorbida, Alda Director, will attend the hearing on the implementation of articles 11 and 12 of the Lisbon Treaty promoted by EESC, the European Economic and Social Committee (Brussels, 17 April 2012).
Mrs. Antonella Valmorbida is Responsible for the Code of Good Practices for Civil Participation in the Decision Making Process, Democracy, Social Cohesion and Global Challenges Committee, Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe.
The Treaty on European Union (TEU), which entered into force in December 2009, gives formal recognition to the role of participatory democracy (civil dialogue, consultation, European citizens' initiative). Article 11 builds on and bolsters the central institution of representative democracy (Articles 10 and 12), thus signifying an innovative European model of democracy.
The task is now to work for a tangible implementation of Article 11, which lays down a general framework.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is a consultative body that gives representatives of Europe's socio-occupational interest groups, and others, a formal platform to express their points of views on EU issues. Its opinions are forwarded to the larger institutions - the Council, the Commission and the European Parliament. It thus has a key role to play in the Union's decision-making process.
