Italian Alliance for the Year of Citizens in the spotlight at the Committee of the Regions
On 3rd July, the Italian Delegation met at the Committee of the Region (CoR), in Brussels. The President of the Delegation Gian Mario Spacca was present, together with the Italian Ambassador Stefano Sannino, Italy’s permanent representative to the European Union, previously European Commission's director-general for enlargement.
Mattia Brazzale represented ALDA and the Italian Alliance for the Year of Citizens 2013 discussing the proposal of adhesion of local authorities to the Alliance. The Italian Delegation supports this motion and invites local authorities to adhere.
During his speech, Sannino highlighted that the successes of the Italian Presidency to the EU will be successes for the whole country, and will allow to focus more attention on the south of the continent. Furthermore, we have to move Italy forward to a federal model and fight eurosceptisism. The CoR was created 20 years ago, and this period is crucial also to further reflect on the next strategy, Europa 2014-2020.
Mercedes Bresso, Vice Presidnet of the CoR and President of the Region Piemonte, stressed that in the new programming phase, further efforts will be needed from local authorities. In relation to the Adriatic-Ionian macro-region, she pointed out that the EU enlargement could represent an opportunity to strenghten relations between Italy and south-east European countries.
