The Rude Awakening - a multimedia journey in the footsteps of frontline soldiers’ everyday life
Lifespan - From 01/01/2020 to 30/06/2021 (18 months)
“The Rude Awakening - a multimedia journey in the footsteps of frontline soldiers’ everyday life” is a co-funded project by the European Union MEDIA Programme, a sub-programme of Creative Europe. The project aims to make technology part of museum visit experiences.
The project will research how to better stimulate the interest of a younger audience (age 13-20) towards history and the value of peace by developing a common narrative outline for historic exhibitions. Such innovative narrative will be developed through projections, interactive totems with audiovisual and digital content, and – more importantly – the development of a videogame and a trailer in virtual reality (VR).
The project will develop a videogame as the core part of an innovative cultural tour that a visitor can experience both physically and virtually accompanied by one or more characters – Austro-Hungarian soldiers of WWI. The narration will be based on accurate documentation and real testimonials, but
the identification with fictional character(s) will be the innovative frame through which the visitor discovers the everyday life of a soldier at war, everyday struggles for food, water, fights against the cold, the hot, the tiredness, the death. The VR trailer will resume the historical background, the locations and some characters by leaving the player at the beginning of the war.
Once the narrative will be completed and its contents produced, a roadshow of exhibitions will be organized in historic sites/museums in Italy, Slovenia, Austria and North Macedonia to promote cultural tourism and test the effectiveness of this innovative cross-media approach to history-telling.
The main objective of the project “The Rude Awakening – a multimedia journey in the footsteps of frontline soldiers’ everyday life” is to increase the access and improving the fruition of sites of European historical and cultural heritage through an innovative cross-sectoral approach based on digital and audiovisual contents installed or projected within the museums and historical sites according to a narrative that allows the visitor an experiential and emotional learning of the themes of war and, consequently, of the importance of peace.
