The opening of the LDA in Kairouan in Tunisia: a historic event for ALDA
The opening of the Local Democracy Agency in Kairouan in Tunisia, the first in Africa, is a historic event for ALDA. On the one hand, it embodies the will to pursue the values that lie at the heart of Europe on the African continent, and on the other, the natural continuation of our activity in the Mediterranean countries.
The choice of Tunisia was certainly not casual: in the country, after the Tunisian Revolution (also called "Jasmine Revolution"), huge gigantic steps were taken to establish efficient democratic institutions, regular elections that renewed Parliament, which approved a new Constitution that enshrined fundamental values in the field of civil rights, equal opportunities and respect for minorities.
That is why Tunisia has been the subject of terrorist attacks, however, it has not undermined the will to affirm democratic rights. And as Europe has not been insensitive to this process of extending democratic rights, by intervening with significant financial efforts in favor of Tunisia, ALDA, which is fully recognized in the action taken by the Council of Europe, wanted to play his part in this direction. It was not an easy and quiet walk. Work, analysis, meetings have lasted for several months. But in the end we did.
I can not forget the valuable contribution of Secretary General Antonella Valmorbida, Anne-Laure Joedicke, Mediterranean Area Manager, ALDA staff, Kairouan local administrators, Tunisian civil society, Moncef Ben Slimane and Lam Echlm European partners who joined the Agency. But the opening of this LDA is undoubtedly an event that rewards the work of all the ALDA Board of Directors, Francesco Zarzana, present at the opening, President Oriano Otocan, Mohamed Shali, who supported and promoted this important milestone.
Now it's about working. We will do so, convinced that Mediterranean Africa can be fertile ground for our business, as demonstrated by the interests already expressed in Morocco and Algeria for further expansion of our membership network.
