A Digital Democracy Network to support active citizenship in the digital era

«Is it already a Digital Democracy?”. This is the question that ALDA, together with 13 other partners, tried to answer during the kick-off meeting and first international event of the ЦИФРОВОЙ проект – Supporting Democratic Union and Active Citizenship in Digital Era from February 4th to 7th, 2020.

The project, supported by the Programme of the European Union, is led by the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid and brings together civil society organisations and local authorities from 13 European countries: Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, Romania, France, Croatia, Latvia as well as Serbia and Macedonia.
The three-day event, hosted in Penne (Italy) by the Association “You Europe”, aimed at discussing how technology shapes and influences democracy at the local level, through insights and the experience of each single partner, as well as from a wider perspective, through the speeches of experts from the academia and jurists. Not only words: partners then had the chance to visit local organisations that work with and through an advanced level of technological innovation, such as the Chamber of Commerce of Chieti-Pescara and Etipublica.
The second of the four events foreseen by the project will take place in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, and focus on media literacy: how to assure a good use of technology and a positive circulation of information in order to shape a fair digital democracy?
Meanwhile, stay tuned and follow the Facebook page of the project: Digital Democracy Network!

Participatory democracy trainings for Comrat local authorities and civil society

From February 4th to 6th, 2020, a series of training activities took place in the City Hall of the Comrat Municipality, in the Gagauz Autonomy, Moldova.

The event, which was presented and led by ALDA Secretary-General Antonella Valmorbida, was well attended by public officials of the city hall, including the city architect, the land engineer and the responsible for attracting investments among others; as well as municipal councilors and representatives of the local civil society.

The training sessions covered participatory democracy theory; a presentation of different levels of participation and policy making; information and outreach activities; consultation methods; good practices and tips.

As the participants expressed their views on the addressed issues, each topic was intensely debated: this then resulted in the collective drafting of an elaborate action plan which saw everybody’s contribution to improve the ecological situation of the municipality.

А national conference is likely to be organised later in 2020 with the aim to refer to the results of the training and translate them into tangible results for the communities of Cimișlia and Comrat. All participants to the 3-day course highly appreciated its organisation, contents and methods and were thankful for the opportunity, which saw a substantial action of support from the Comrat Town Hall.

The project “Empowering local authorities and civil society to deliver solutions with participatory democracy” is implemented thanks to the Фонд Конрада Аденауэра with the support of ALDA and of the AGREED project of the European Commission.

An extra touch of Europe in Vicenza with ALDA's new offices and action plan!

In the evening of January 30th, 2020 the Vicenza branch of ALDA held the official launching event of its new office spaces in the city. It was a great occasion filled with lively participation and enriched with many news from the Association, which is strengthening its action in the territory as well as its connection with Europe.

The highlights?

Certainly a great turnout of partners, members, friends, neighbours and interested parties; the inauguration of the new co-working spaces and of the training room dedicated to ALDA Honorary President Gianfranco Martini; the presentation of the exhibition /e.mò.ti.con/ illustrate emotion, set up on the walls of ALDA by La Piccionaia Centro di Produzione Teatrale in collaboration with Associazione Illustri; and, perhaps above all, an official yet also extremely heartfelt atmosphere all throughout the event, as the new territorial strategy of ALDA was presented by ALDA Secretary-General Antonella Valmorbida, Marco Boaria and Sofia Corsi with regards to the Vicenza area and its connection with Europe.

At the dawn of the Association’s twenty years of activity, the fruitful sharing of its work with its Vicenza neighbourhood, Municipality and wider territory is one of the most beautiful results that could have been aspired to, of course under the classic ALDA labels that characterise its activity in every project and endeavour: participatory democracy, active citizenship, social responsibility, universal rights.

These are, indeed, themes and concepts that ALDA has the fortune and the opportunity to share, discuss and promote through European projects together with its more than 350 members – among which are several municipalities and civil society associations in the Vicenza territory such as the Municipalities of Valdagno, well represented at the launching event by their local authorities; and the European Federalist Movement (Vicenza section), Cooperativa Sociale Studio Progetto, La Piccionaia to name a few.

This inauguration is situated in a crucial moment of expansion and evolution for ALDA both in its ‘historical’ territorial branches and in the enlarged Europe, and is the first of a significant series of events and collaborations conceived by the Association for the year 2020 together with its members, partners and networks.

Happy 20th anniversary, ALDA!

About Brexit: a word by Secretary-General Antonella Valmorbida

The night of the results of the referendum on Brexit, I was in Kutaisi, Georgia. I was there for a training on civil society and local authorities’ cooperation. It was summertime. I remember the moment when we saw on the TV screen the result of the voting: “51.89% voted for Leave versus 48.11% for Remain”. We were all shocked.

Now, the other night, I must admit that the shock was even bigger, not only because the Brexit actually took place but because most of the Brexiters’ reasoning made me realize how much we have been living a different movie, through all these years.

This makes me think that indeed, we too often give our own reasoning for granted since we tend to surround ourselves with people who think like us, instead of discussing with those who think differently. An overwhelming communication “without information” makes things even worse. I just don’t understand the reasons why the UK left the EU. And, if I try to understand why all this happened, it gets petrifying: to win “back” the right to take their own decisions, to recast themselves as the protagonists of their actions, to manage their money, to fight their own battles, to fight against a corrupt EU, to be masters of their own destiny.

Except that, nowadays, it is foolish to believe one can live in their own little corner of the universe. How can it be possible for highly educated people, global leaders that are constantly internationally exposed, to think that there is a place where one can “govern” alone?

ALDA has a few members in the UK and all of them are pro-Europe. We are part of many networks whose UK partners are active and leading forces. We want to continue working with them by all means. We want to be close and to expand our work, actions and mission together. We won’t let them down despite all circumstances: they proved to be active in engaging citizens for inclusive and successful communities.

To all of them, we say: we want you with us because you are part of us.

O Brexitu: obraćanje Generalne sekretarke Antonele Valmorbide
