The conference ‘Crisis and renaissance: Social and community theatre paving the way towards European active citizenship’ will take place on Wednesday 22 May, 9:00 to 18:00, at The Square, Brussels Meeting Centre (Rue Ravenstein nr 2, Brussels).

The conference is part of the project ‘CARAVAN. Artists on the Road ‘, and is designed to help raise awareness about the community theatre as a powerful  tool to tackle ongoing economic and social crisis in Europe.

It will bring together experts, practitioners, performers and cultural organizations & networks from across Europe to exchange best practice and disseminate the results achieved over the past two years in local communities in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark and Bulgaria. It will explore the concept of “Rebirth from Crisis” through interventions and artistic performances based on the methodology of community theatre, with the aim of boosting the cultural and social empowerment of local communities in some symbolic places of crisis in Europe.

A practical workshop with theatre games designed on situations related specifically to European citizenship will conclude the day.

CARAVAN. Artists on the Road is a Community Theatre  project  created by a multi-disciplinary partnership consisting of 11 cultural organizations from 9 European countries.

The Caravan travelling theatre is touring throughout Europe presenting over 50 performances in 11 European countries. The project promotes culture as a sustainable response to social and economic crisis.
