Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the sixteen German federal states, located in the centre-west of the country, with about 4.1 million inhabitants and Mainz as its capital. Bordering Belgium, Luxembourg, and France, it stands out as a truly European region, deeply engaged in international cooperation. Rhineland-Palatinate has a strong tradition of local democracy. It is divided into 24 districts, 129 municipal associations, and over 2,200 municipalities—all with directly elected councils and mayors. This structure ensures that political decisions are made close to the citizens.
Politically, Rhineland-Palatinate, led by Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer, focuses on climate action, sustainable energy, education, digitalization, and innovation. The state is currently building a partnership with the Vinnytsia region in Ukraine, in cooperation with ALDA, to promote local democracy, civic engagement, and international collaboration based on freedom and peace.
