ALDA works in the European Union promoting active European citizenship, in tight cooperation with local authorities, civil society networks, and European institutions.
The activities of ALDA help raising citizens' understanding and sense of belonging to the European Union, and stimulate intercultural dialogue and civic participation.
By conducting its own and its members' projects, as well as through lobbying activities, ALDA fosters citizen participation and local democracy on four main pillars: citizenship, culture, education and volunteering; social issues; youth empowerment and employment; health and environment.
The European Association for Local Democracy is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of good governance and citizen participation at the local level. ALDA focuses on activities that facilitate cooperation between local authorities and civil society.
The Western Balkans Summit 2017 took place on 12 July in Trieste, Italy, gathering Heads of Government of the Western Balkans and their counterparts from 6 EU Member States, together with high representatives of the European Commission. One of the key topics of this year’s summit is regional cooperation and youth.

On 11 July, the region Friuli-Venezia Giulia hosted a meeting in Brussels with mayors from Lybia and representatives of ALDA. In the framework of European Committee of the Regions Nicosia initiative, the objective is to jointly design actions to strengthen local governance and economy, especially in the field of fishing.Read more
A group of students from Scuola Secondaria di 1° Grado “Mainardi”, located in Vicenza, Italy, created an original photostory on the topic of the European Union, its history and its future. The initiative, supervised by Prof. Rachele de Prisco, aimed to raise awareness among the youngest on what it means to be a European citizen.Read more
