From 8 to 10 June 2026, Brussels will welcome a delegation of African mayors and local government representatives as part of the IODP Afrique initiative and the Forum Économique des Territoires d’Afrique, an initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation between local authorities, international organisations and development partners.

Over three days, participants will engage in a series of institutional meetings, exchanges and study visits focused on local governance, democratic participation, decentralisation and international cooperation.

The programme includes meetings with key organisations and networks active in democracy support and local governance, including ALDA, Cities Alliance, Open Government Partnership (OGP), Platforma, VNG International, TED Network, Enabel and UNDP. Participants will also visit the European Committee of the Regions and the Parlamentarium, gaining further insight into European governance structures and multilevel cooperation.

The visit will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, explore common challenges faced by local authorities and strengthen partnerships between African and European actors committed to democratic governance and sustainable territorial development.

As part of the programme, ALDA will contribute to discussions on local democracy, citizen participation and international cooperation, reinforcing its commitment to supporting local authorities and democratic governance worldwide.
