ALDA works in the Western Balkans and in the European Neighbourhood – Mediterranean area, Eastern Europe, and Southern Caucasus – to foster good governance, citizen participation, European integration, and decentralization.
It coordinates and supports the network of 11 Local Democracy Agencies and 3 Operational Partners in their activities. Most of the Local Democracy Agencies are located in the Western Balkans, but ALDA is becoming more and more active in the European Neighbourhood. In 2006 it expanded its network to Southern Caucasus. ALDA is now working towards the opening of 3 new Local Democracy Agencies: in Odessa, Ukraine; in Moldova and in Tunisia.
ALDA is also leading several projects and developing partnerships in other European Neighbourhood countries, including Belarus, Azerbaijan, Morocco, and Turkey.
The European Association for Local Democracy is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of good governance and citizen participation at the local level. ALDA focuses on activities that facilitate cooperation between local authorities and civil society.

On January 15th, 2020 the partners and sub-grantees of the project “CSOs making local democracy work” met in Skopje. During the meeting the representatives from the 12 partner organizations had the opportunity to present the results of their projects and their positive experiences, and to evaluate the implemented activities within the project.Read more
The 3rd international event within the RECOV project took place in Lisbon, Portugal from October 21st to 23rd, 2019. The conference was entitled “Innovative and sustainable financial instruments for local governments”, with a special focus on EU rules and mechanisms and on new sustainable financial instruments for PAs in response to the economic crisis.Read more
As the year 2020 marks ALDA’s 20th anniversary, its growth isn’t just a matter of age but also a matter of size: in the past few years, in fact, ALDA has considerably increased in very physical ways, including the number of its staff members, offices, width of geographical areas covered… and, most recently, our office in Vicenza changed, too! The ALDA Talks series successfully saw the light on December 17th, 2019 with its first episode on “Participatory Processes at the Local Level” presented by our very own experts. The second episode, “Environmental Governance: Main Challenges and Best Practices” will take place on January 23rd and will be presented by experts from the Municipality of Lousada (Portugal), an ALDA member that recently received the "Transformative Action Award".Read more
