SW-UP was designed to shed light on why and how to design women-friendly urban environments for outdoor sports and physical activity. While there are numerous initiatives to enhancing women’s participation in sports, less attention has been paid to designing women friendly urban environments for sports and physical activity. The project was conceived to draft guidelines on promoting a women-friendly urban environment for outdoor sport, including a roadmap on women-friendly urban environments for outdoor sport at the local level. Moreover, the project has identified a set of priorities for improving urban places for outdoor physical activity from a gender equality perspective.
SW-UP project had the objective of creating urban environments for sports and physical activity that are women-friendly and to gather evidence on how to do it, in order to disincentivize women from conducting a sedentary life. To do so, it created a “SW-UP” Community of practice and platform for the project partners and other stakeholders, provided in-depth knowledge on barriers for women to practicing outdoor sports and on good practices, increased women’s awareness and participation in outdoor sports/physical activity and defined and disseminated guidelines for promoting women friendly urban environments for outdoor sports.
