Ethical AI in Local Governance – Interactive Policy Workshop

As part of All Digital Weeks 2026 (9–25 March), ALDA’s Digital & Innovation Hub is pleased to host the online interactive workshop “Ethical AI in Local Governance – Opportunities and Safeguards for Communities”, taking place on 24 March 2026 at 11:00 CET.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in local governance, from social service eligibility screening and predictive risk assessments to AI chatbots for citizen interaction and urban planning tools. While these innovations can enhance efficiency and inclusion, they also raise important questions regarding equality, transparency, accountability and democratic legitimacy.

This workshop will provide a structured space to assess AI deployments through an ethical and governance lens, supporting local authorities and civil society actors in navigating responsible digital transformation. The session contributes to the broader objectives of the All Digital Weeks 2026 campaign, co-funded by the European Commission and centred on “Digital well-being for a competitive Europe”.

Agenda highlights:

• Strategic framing: Expert input on real-world AI use cases in public services and governance, exploring democratic risks such as bias, opacity and accountability gaps.

• Policy simulation: A “Municipal Ethics Council” simulation to analyse a practical AI case and identify safeguards, oversight mechanisms and non-automatable functions.

• Plenary deliberation: Collective reflection to build shared principles for transparency, inclusion and democratic resilience.

Participants will gain practical tools to evaluate ethical risks in AI systems and align local practices with emerging European standards, including the EU AI Act.

The workshop is free of charge, with participation limited to 30 attendees to ensure an interactive experience.
